Jaguars report: Notes, quotes
--Don't look for any Jaguars football players to be confused with any of the professional golfers competing at The Players Championship this week in nearby Ponte Vedra Beach. Eight current members of the Jacksonville team took part in the first annual "Laterra Links Celebrity Shootout" at The King and the Bear Golf Course this week to raise money to benefit the St. Johns County Council on Aging. Among those participating were Adam Podlesh, Josh Scobee, Rashean Mathis, Brad Meester, Derek Landri, Cleo Lemon, Drayton Florence and Andrew Carnahan. The format called for one golfer to be eliminated on each hole before a winner would be eventually crowned. What started out with a lot of jokes and laughter on the first tee, turned serious on the last hole for punter Podlesh and place-kicker Scobee, the last two survivor's in the event. Both players hit tee shots down the middle of the ninth fairway but Scobee's approach missed the green while Podlesh took advantage of the opening, hitting a wedge from 102 yards out to two feet from the pin to secure the win. "An amazing finish," Podlesh said. "My heart was pounding out there. I felt like I was back on the football field. That was definitely the best shot I have ever hit, considering the circumstances. Josh and I were talking as we walked off the last green about how fun this was. It was an awesome day for a great cause on a wonderful golf course." --When new teammates Drayton Florence, Cleo Lemon and Jerry Porter joined the Jaguars via free agency this past March, they never imagined that their first group session would be building a house. The three players were among the many Jaguars volunteers who participated in the annual HabiJax home build. The Jaguars have participated in the HabiJax program for over 10 years and are one of the larger sponsors of the community program. HabiJax is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and was founded in 1988. Each year Jaguars players, ROAR cheerleaders and front office staff help to build a house for a local Jacksonville resident. This year's resident, Katrina Platts, was among the two dozen volunteers hammering nails and framing the walls. Jaguars offensive tackle Tony Pashos and long snapper Joe Zelenka took the lead for the crew of volunteer workers. The two Jaguars players helped show their strength as the group framed the entire 1,300 square foot house in Duval County. "HabiJax is just a great experience," said Zelenka. "It's a good time to go outside and build somebody a home. It was good to be out with a couple of the fellas that I don't get to see much -- Drayton, Tony and Cleo. "We got to get some fellowship in and we got to carry some wood around and hammer some nails. It was fun, easy and sweaty experience and I would recommend it to everyone." --Two weeks after the college draft and people are still talking about how defensive end Quentin Groves, the Jaguars' second-round pick, is going to fit into the team's 4-3 defense. At 6-3, 260 pounds, Groves appears to be the ideal fit for a 3-4 defense. But Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has no concern with the selection of Groves and how he'll fit into the team's defensive alignment this year. "He can play some end of the line 'Sam' but the way a 3-4 team might use him, you can do some of that if you're going to play a reduction front with that. But we didn't draft him with that in mind," Del Rio said. "We drafted him to be a right end, a pass rusher and a guy that if he shows he's capable of stacking the point and fending off tight ends, then we'll put him in position to make plays. We saw enough of that on tape, that he can stack the point. He did do 30 reps on the bench, he does roll his hips and when his hand placement is good, he has plenty of strength at the point."
