The Chargers signed WR/KR Mark Jones, formerly of the Buccaneers, to a contract Friday. "Mark's versatility was very attractive to us," said GM A.J. Smith. "He's an experienced NFL punt returner and a solid player who will raise the level of competition in our camp." (Updated 06/20/2008)
The Tampa Tribune reports Bucs rookie RB Cory Boyd was held out of practice Tuesday because of a knee injury, and he is not expected to play again until training camp in July. Boyd, a seventh-round draft pick who played for the University of South Carolina, spent most of Tuesday's practice on the sideline. (Updated 06/18/2008)
The St. Petersburg Times reports Bucs RB Cadillac Williams wasted no opportunity during the offseason to reinforce how far he has come in his remarkable and inspiring rehabilitation from last season's devastating knee injury. By all accounts, the coaching and medical staffs agree, but that doesn't mean they're willing to take chances and rush the recovery of 2005's No. 5 overall draft pick. Though no announcement has been made, indications are Williams is headed for the Physically Unable to Perform List when camp opens next week. Because players who begin the preseason on the active roster cannot subsequently move to the PUP list, the Bucs must make the designation before they begin their first practice, scheduled for July 26. But in the preseason, PUP isn't nearly as restrictive as during the regular season. In fact, Williams would be eligible to be activated from the list at any time during the preseason. The Tampa Tribune reports that Buccaneers TE Jerramy Stevens has been suspended for two games and fined three pay checks for violating the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy. The suspension could increase if he doesn't stay out of trouble with the law. According to the NFL's release, "Stevens' suspension begins on Saturday, August 30. He is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games." Stevens was arrested in March, 2007 and charged with DUI and possession of marijuana and was previously suspended for that. The Tampa Tribune reports Bucs WR Joey Galloway said Thursday that he is fully recovered from offseason surgery to repair a left shoulder injury that rendered him ineffective and frustrated in that elimination game. "It's fine, it's ready to go," Galloway, 36, said. "I have a lot of confidence in our medical staff here. It was pretty smooth and the rehab was pretty smooth." Galloway injured his left shoulder at San Francisco on Dec. 23 and was inactive in the regular-season finale against Carolina. He was limited to one catch for 9 yards in a playoff setback that ended Tampa Bay's season at 9-8 and dropped Galloway to 0-4 in the playoffs. Following surgery to repair some tearing in the labrum and rotator cuff, he is eager to defend the NFC South title. (Updated 06/06/2008)
The Tampa Tribune reports Dallas, Chicago and Detroit are interested in Bucs QB Chris Simms, who remains with Tampa Bay but doesn't want to play there. As the fifth quarterback on Tampa Bay's depth chart, Simms just wants to be released and have an opportunity to play for another team. He wants this relationship to end, but the Bucs are holding on with hopes of getting something in exchange for him. One reasonable alternative would be to trade Simms for a conditional draft pick based on his playing time. Tampa Bay could initially receive a seventh-round draft pick that could increase to a fifth- or fourth-rounder based on Simms' performance this season. Both teams win in that scenario. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed rookie safety Sabby Piscitelli on injured reserve and promoted receiver Chad Lucas from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday. Piscitelli, a second-round draft choice, suffered a foot injury during the first half of last Sunday's 24-3 victory over the St. Louis Rams. (Updated 09/26/2007)
