CHICAGO -- Observations from the Chicago Bears' first game of the preseason:
1. The injury to offensive tackle Chris Williams has critics second-guessing Chicago's selecting of the first-round pick. Some teams stayed away from Williams due to concerns about his back. Now he has back surgery. As much as the Bears are downplaying any coincidence, the timing sure does look strange.
2. Watch this name carefully: Garrett Wolfe. The second-year back might be a star this coming season. He has a chance to be the next Maurice Jones-Drew. "It's an honor to be compared to him," Wolfe said. He added: "Maurice is a little bit bigger than me but I'm a little bit faster." Matt Forte and Wolfe could be quite a solid running back duo. Forte is also a solid pass blocker.
3. It's only preseason, and the only thing more meaningless than NFL preseason is NBA preseason. But the Kansas City offense, which is very average (and that's putting it nicely), was able to move the ball pretty easily on Chicago's first-team defense on Thursday night's opening drive. Coach Lovie Smith vowed to make sure that didn't happen again.
4. Devin Hester continues to play at wide receiver. One NFL scout who watched him against the Chiefs believes Hester has improved dramatically as a pass catcher and is a viable option at wideout.
5. Bears receivers continue to drop passes. It has been something that plagued the team during the Grossman era.
