Favre proves to be tease for Bucs fans

Aug. 7--The Brett Favre drama turned out to be a tease for Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans.

The New York Jets outbid the Bucs for the NFL's all-time leader in passing yardage and touchdowns late Wednesday night, according to FoxSports.com.

Favre, 38, reportedly was traded to the Jets for a compensation package of a conditional draft pick based on how the Jets perform in the 2008 season.

Neither Favre nor Jets officials were quoted in the story.

The Packers favored Favre going to the Jets and getting him out of the NFC, rather than facing the scenario of playing against the most popular player in franchise history following a very public and acrimonious divorce.

Favre had angled for a trade to the NFC North Division-rival Minnesota Vikings, but the Packers were in conversations Tuesday and Wednesday with the Bucs and Jets.

At some point during conversations between Favre and his agent, Mississippi-based Bus Cook, the Jets convinced Favre to accept the trade to the Jets, who went 4-12 last year, and the Packers moved.

Don't expect the Bucs to have much to say about the transaction, though, when they practice today at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

Coach Jon Gruden danced around the Favre subject during his Wednesday post-practice session with the media, while General Manager Bruce Allen was out of town.

He arrived to camp Wednesday and declined requests to speak to reporters.

Tampa Bay opens the preseason Saturday night at Miami, with starting quarterback Jeff Garcia sidelined with a calf strain and backup Luke McCown scheduled to start and eventually give way to Brian Griese.

Just where Garcia's head is following his team's very public romance with Favre is something the Bucs will have to deal with.
