Smith could return to 49ers: The San Francisco Chronicle reports QB Alex Smith could return to the 49ers next year if he's willing to take a pay cut. Smith is due $9.6 million next season, which is a lot of money for a non-starter. Smith recently had shoulder surgery to correct problems related to his 2007 injury. He has been on injured reserve since the summer. "The surgery went well," GM Scot McCloughan said. "He should be back throwing 100 percent by January, which is really good. But discussions have not taken place between us." Asked if Smith could be part of the 49ers in 2009, McCloughan said, "Sure, he could be. The key thing is it's got to make sense for both sides. I fully think he's going to be a good quarterback in the NFL. They're hard to come by. You never count anyone out that you think is going to be a good quarterback."
