McCown wants to 'be the guy': The Tyler Morning Telegraph reports Bucs QB Luke McCown is excited about the competition for the starting job with Byron Leftwich and rookie Josh Freeman. McCown has only started seven games in a five-year career that started with Cleveland in 2004. "I think the competition, the atmosphere that (coach) Raheem (Morris) has created is going to be good for our team, make everyone play harder, better," McCown said. "I'm going into my sixth year with only seven starts. I've got a lot of football in me, just not on the field. I've got an opportunity this year to compete to be the starter. My first goal is to do just that - win the competition, be the guy on the field every down, every game and do everything in my power to help my team win."

Fantasy Analysis

We think McCown has a good chance to win the job, but look for Leftwich and Freeman to also see time this year as the starter. This is not a good Fantasy situation, so plan on avoiding McCown, Leftwich and Freeman in seasonal leagues. Even if McCown wins the job, he is a No. 3 Fantasy option at best.

QBs Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich are going back and forth in the momentum battle to see who will emerge as the Buccaneers' starting quarterback. "Byron had a good day, but Luke has had his days here, too," coach Raheem Morris said. "We're charting it, we're looking at it and it's tight. It's exactly what we said we wanted," Morris said. "We wanted competition and we've got it. If they're going to make tough decisions for us, that's great. I don't want anybody to give it to them. I don't want anybody to win by default. I want it to be a guy where we all jump on his back and say, "That's our guy, let's go with him." Performance in practice and the first two preseason games will likely become the final gauge of who will start and who sits. Rookie Josh Freeman, the 17th overall pick in the draft, isn't expected to contend for the job until later in the regular season. 64//2009
