Hester no-shows training camp: Devin Hester, who has electrified the NFL with 11 punt and kickoff returns for touchdowns in his first two seasons, skipped the Chicago Bears' first training camp practice Wednesday in a holdout. A two-time Pro Bowler, Hester was placed on the Bears' Reserve/Did Not Report list. Hester, who also played wide receiver last season, has two years remaining on his initial deal. He was the Bears' second round-draft pick in 2006."I'm not coming," Hester told the Chicago Tribune in a phone interview. "I have to make a statement. I showed by going to (organized team activities) that I was a team player. But then, I just felt like they weren't taking it seriously that I wanted to get a new deal." (Updated 07/23/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Hester spent the entire offseason working with the club on his receiving skills in hopes of reaching his potential of being a big-play wide receiver for the Bears. The club hoped he'd meet that potential as well. Additionally, he's the best special-teams return man in the NFL today and adds to the Bears' potential of scoring each week. We'll monitor the latest on Hester and his holdout, but we expect him to be a middle-end reserve Fantasy WR worth a late-round pick in seasonal drafts -- and obviously much higher in those leagues that reward special-teams production. (Updated 07/23/2008).
WR/return specialist Devin Hester did not report to the opening of the Bears' training camp, and said he will not report until he gets a new contract. Hester still has two years remaining on his contract that is due to pay him $445,000 this season and $530,000 in 2009, but wants to be paid like a receiver while the Bears are willing to pay him only as a top special teams performer. "I'm not coming," he told the Chicago Tribune. "I have to make a statement. I showed by going to [organized team activities] that I was a team player. But then, I just felt they weren't taking it seriously that I wanted to get a new deal. "I can't go out and play this year making $445,000. Come on, man." 07/24/2008

Advice
Hester was placed on the Bears' Did Not Report list. The reason for his absence was not immediately known Wednesday. Hester has 11 kick returns for touchdowns in his first two NFL seasons, which is two short of the league record. He also plays wide receiver. The Bears had hoped to extend Hester's contract before training camp but had not completed a deal.

A quarterback competition promises to heat up the Chicago Bears' training camp, and coach Lovie Smith wanted to make it clear there was no perceived favorite between Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton.
Fantasy owners are unsure what to do about Brett Favre at this point. Our Jamey Eisenberg says you still have to draft him and takes a look at how Favre might do if he leaves the Packers in 2008.
