Smith, Hill ready for battle: The Sacramento Bee reports 49ers coach Mike Nolan said all three of his passers -- Alex Smith, Shaun Hill and J.T. O'Sullivan -- would get practice repetitions but that Smith and Hill would continue to get most of the work during training camp. Nolan said both quarterbacks would have an opportunity to start an exhibition game and that he hoped one of them would be leading the competition by the third exhibition game Aug. 21 in Chicago. That player ostensibly would start the Chicago game and be the 49ers' opening week starter. "Once a guy is the guy, he better stay ready and stay atop his game," Nolan said. "It's not like this is a locked-in job forever." (Updated 07/11/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Smith is the leading candidate to start the season for the 49ers, with Hill second and O'Sullivan third. Whoever wins the starting job could be a decent sleeper since Mike Martz is now the offensive coordinator in San Franciso. Keep an eye on what develops, but it's not a bad idea to take a late-round flier on the 49ers' starting QB as a No. 2 Fantasy option. (Updated 07/11/2008).
