Brees has new backup: According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, free-agent QB Mark Brunell has reached an agreement in principle to join the Saints this season. The deal will be for two years. Brunell, 37, visited with the Saints on Monday night and Tuesday. He'll likely replace veteran backup Jamie Martin on the roster as Drew Brees' understudy. Brunell had been released by the Washington Redskins last week. Brunell began his career in Green Bay as a backup to Brett Favre. He is a former Pro Bowl quarterback who has thrown for 31,826 yards, 182 touchdowns and 106 interceptions in his 14-year career. (Updated 03/14/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Don't worry about Brees being in any kind of jeopardy of losing his job. He is the unquestioned starter for the Saints, and the only way Brunell would see the field is if Brees got hurt. (Updated 03/14/2008).
QB Drew Brees joined New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on a seven-day, three-country summer USO tour last week. The tour was led by Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It was the first time that the commissioner of a sports league visited U.S. troops overseas as part of a USO tour. In addition, it was the second USO-sponsored tour this spring for Brees, who earlier visited Okinawa. While on those Pacific beaches, Brees talked by phone to his grandfather, who had landed as a U.S. Marine there more than 60 years earlier and participated in some of the heaviest fighting in World War II. 07/17/2008
