Overview

Exciting talent who made the transition from wide receiver to cornerback in 2004 and still finished his senior season as the SEC's leader in passes broken up.

Wade signed with Tennessee as one of the more highly touted athletes in the country. An All-America sprinter for Tennessee, he has been known more for his potential than production throughout much of his football career with the Vols.

He entered his senior year with 56 tackles, six passes broken up and two interceptions to his credit. This season, he racked up 49 tackles, five tackles for loss and 17 passes defensed, four of which were interceptions.

Wade is certainly raw, but his combination of sprinter speed, game-breaking ability and frame can't be coached. With time to develop, Wade has the potential to be one of the real game-changers of this draft; an upside teams will struggle to pass on.

Analysis

Positives: Smooth, long-armed athlete … Has the frame to add another 10 pounds … Rare speed … A four-time track All-American, with his 60-yard dash among Tennessee's all-time top 10, as are three different 4x100 relays in which he participated … Overall athleticism pops off the film … Quickness in coverage, deep speed, acceleration, and make-up speed are all outstanding … Vast improvement this year in terms of his playing with physicality and toughness … Played like a football player this year, as opposed to a track guy in shoulder pads as he had in the past … Good hands to make the interception … Developing diagnostic skills … Superb upside.

Negatives: Until this season, Wade was quietly considered immature and unable or unwilling to reach his potential on the gridiron … Hadn't devoted himself to football all year long until this year, choosing instead to run track … Not known for his toughness or willingness to come up in run support … More of a duck-and-grab tackler than a true face, hit, and lift textbook hitter … Questions as to whether the motivation to play so well this season was the money of the NFL … Will he revert back after getting the big contract?

High School

Preseason All-America by Tom Lemming and SuperPrep … Class 5A all-state performer as a senior … Recorded 24 tackles, 30 passes broken up and three interceptions as a senior defensive back … Teams went 54-3 in his career, including three Class 5A state titles and 1999 national crown … Three-year starter at cornerback and two-year starter at wide receiver … Best game as a defensive back was against Holy Cross, with seven passes broken up in holding one of state's top receivers without a catch … Also an accomplished track and field athlete … Won 200-meters with time of 20.95 at 2001 World Youth Championships … Also won 2001 state 100-meter and 200-meter titles … Set state record in 200-meters (21.03) and his best 100-meter time was 10.15 … Louisiana 2001 Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year … All-state MVP in track his junior season by The Shreveport Times … Principal's List in 2001 and was honor roll student.
