Warriors report: Getting inside
Not long after most fans thought the Warriors should be reserving their favorite seat at the next NBA Draft Lottery, the club quickly scrambled to make some moves designed to ease the pain of Baron Davis' somewhat unexpected departure. Suffice it to say, the additions of Corey Maggette, Ronny Turiaf and Marcus Williams haven't exactly prompted the Warriors to start printing playoff tickets, but re-signing Monta Ellis certainly doesn't hurt. Whether they retain restricted free agent Andris Biedrins or not, the Warriors will have a drastically different look next season. That's not exactly a good idea when you're coming off a thoroughly entertaining, 48-win season with a relatively young cast. Maggette will start at small forward and should battle Ellis and Stephen Jackson for team scoring honors. Turiaf, who is likely to come off the bench if Biedrins returns, might be the team's No. 2 rebounder. And Williams, mostly a backup in New Jersey, could find himself starting at point guard if Ellis is unable to make a smooth transition to Davis' old spot. The result: A much deeper team after Chris Mullin and Don Nelson agreed a lack of depth had been the No. 1 reason the club didn't make the playoffs in 2007-08. Having exhausted almost the entire $17.8 million in savings that was created by Davis' departure, the Warriors were prepared to turn their attention to Priority One as the calendar turned to August. Being that Golden State retains the right to match any other team's offer, Mullin has pledged that Biedrins would be re-signed. If little else, Warriors fans at least will recognize him.
