NBA files for rights to six nicknames for Oklahoma City franchise

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The NBA has filed for trademark rights to six possible nicknames for the league's new Oklahoma City franchise: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.

An attorney for the league made the filing Monday with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Marshal is usually spelled with one "l." It's not clear why the league used a variant spelling.

The filing is listed on the patent office's website.

The NBA and the team have refused to discuss possible new names for the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics ahead of an official announcement, which has not yet been scheduled.

(POLL) Which team name do you like the most? I'm thinking the Marshalls.

Wind? Thunder?

Whatever they pick, it should be geographic neutral ... because there's no way this thing lasts in OKC more than a decade once the novelty wears off.

Can anyone say Vancouver Grizzlies?

I thought that would be kind of a funny name.  I mean, there is part of the state that is considered the "panhandle".

Seriously though, Bison is kind of a cool name.  Barons would be alright too.

This is sad, after what the team's been thru, OKC still can't come up with the name for their NBA team. The game hasn't even started yet and we already have OKC fans making fun of the names they came up with, sad. I still think they should name it as OKC Stern, a tribute to the commisioner as without his "behind the door" negotiations, OKC would not have an NBA team ...(more)

Those are horrible.  I'm still waiting for Memphis to change their name from that of a creature that has not graced that vicinity since the last Ice Age, if ever... Frankly, given the NBAs refereeing scandal, I think the "Memphis (Riverboat) Gamblers" is the right moniker.  I'm guessing Stern probably wouldn't go along with that.

How about the friggin &qu ...(more)
