Report: Kobe locks down first MVP award

LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant has won the NBA's MVP award for the first time, the Los Angeles Times reported on its website Friday night, citing anonymous sources familiar with the outcome of voting by media members.

The newspaper reported that commissioner David Stern will be in Los Angeles next week to present the trophy to Bryant.

"We have not been told anything by the league," Lakers spokesman John Black told the Associated Press.

Bryant, who entered the season as the league's two-time defending scoring champion, had finished third in the MVP voting twice -- after the 2002-03 campaign, when he averaged 30 points for the first time, and again last season, when Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki won the award.

Bryant averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.84 steals while playing in all 82 games despite tearing a ligament in his right pinkie finger in February. A hand specialist recommended surgery, but Bryant decided to put it off until after the Olympics this summer.

He led the Lakers to the best record in the Western Conference and a sweep of Denver in the first round of the playoffs. The Lakers open the second round Sunday against Utah at Staples Center.

Bryant, second in the NBA in scoring behind Cleveland's LeBron James, will be the first Lakers player to win the MVP award since Shaquille O'Neal was a near-unanimous choice in 2000. Other previous Lakers to win the award dating to 1956, when it was first presented, were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, who each won it three times. Abdul-Jabbar also won three with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Congrats on a very popular thread.  After examining your posts, I can describe mgice...etc, without having taken any psychology courses, never been a probation officer, and have never even accessed myspace.  I will only use raw instincts.

I guarantee to be right on 96.8% of my character(or lack thereof) profile assessment of the boy genius.  So here goes:

Kobe matured this year. He made his teammates better and stayed within himself. When the Lakers needed him to step up his game, Kobe knew when to do it. No longer the selfish spoiled rich kid. A team player. Undoubtably the best player in the NBA this year. Keep it up Kobe. Haters will always keep on hating, use it to your advantage. ...(more)

Kobe & CP3 were both deserving.  Without giving a co-MVP, which is dumb, one had to win and one had to lose.  You can make a case for, or against.  Those that don't like Kobe say CP3 got robbed.  Laker fans say its deserving.

CP3 will get his chance.  He's still young.  And something tells me when he hangs them up, he'll have at least 1 M

Get a grip and clear the Kobe fog out of your brain if you have one and look at it from a bystander and you would know that without Gasol the Lakers would be average at best. Kobe is a good basketball player with great skills and that is about it. He can take over a game like nobody else in the NBA but what good is that when you have ...(more)

(POLL) If this is true, I do not see any way to argue it.
Kobe has matured defensively and as a teammate the last few years and he led his team to the top spot in the conference. That being said, and I know this is a little early, but I'm still curious....

Who do you got for next year???

Congratulations Kobe on finally becoming a team asset.  I'm glad he finally got an MVP award.  His talents were deserving of the award before, but the attitude wasn't there.  He can still tone down the pride a little, but then he wouldn't be the Black Mamba!  I don't see him winning any more of these though...

I keep reading all of these posts about why Kobe was deserved of the MVP award and I just have to shake my head. You people all think that just because his team had some injuries that he should get the edge over anyone else. Give me and all the NBA fans a break, everyone has injuries and other issues throughout the season that can hamper a team but don't bring that up because we'll never know what ...(more)

Kobe deserved this award in every way.  He carried his team through devestating injuries to the top of a tough division dominated by veterans and big guys.  He did it with a good, but not great, supporting cast.  Most importantly, every game was won or lost depending on how Kobe played--and they won much more than they lost.

He deserves all the guff he gets for his of
