Smith re-ups with Timberwolves: The Timberwolves signed restricted free agent Craig Smith to a two-year deal on Thursday that runs through the 2009-10 season. "We like Craig a great deal. I didn't see any reason not to try to really re-sign him," Kevin McHale said in a teleconference from Las Vegas, where the Wolves have a summer league team. "There was an opportunity possibly to go out and chase other free agents, but it didn't make any sense to me. Our young guys, I like a great deal."

At 6-foot-8, Smith is slightly short for a power forward, but his powerful 250-pound frame has made him an effective presence in the low post off the bench. The former second-round pick averaged 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds a game last year for the Timberwolves, his third season in the league. He scored a career-high 36 points against the Wizards in December. He'll battle with Ryan Gomes for backup minutes, but is a player worth taking a flier on. Monitor his progress in the preseason.
