ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -A critical-care nurse who moonlights as a boxing contender, Elizabeth Mooney is scheduled to fight Saturday night against Bonnie Mann at the State University at Albany.
The 38-year-old Mooney, wife and mother of two boys from the Albany suburb of Delmar, will face Mann, from Raleigh, N.C., over 10 rounds for the women's WBE welterweight title, promoter Rick Sweeney said. Mooney, who had a 14-5 amateur record before turning pro in 2004 has a 4-3 pro record with two knockouts.
In her hometown professional debut, she stopped Cristy Nickel in early 2006. She was stopped six months later by now top-rated Jisselle Salandy in seven rounds in Trinidad and Tobago in her last fight. Mooney works as a critical-care nurse at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Mann's record is 11-7 with four knockouts. She has won eight straight, most recently stopping Latreka Moody in her pro debut in August.
Also scheduled are former NABA welterweight champion Chris Smith (20-4-1, 13 KOs) of New York, against Jonathan Tubbs (10-3-1, 3 KOs), of Rochester; light heavyweights John Johnson (12-1, 10 KOs) of Batesville, Miss., against Dhafir Smith (18-16-6, 4 KOs) of Philadelphia.
University athletics officials said it may be the first professional boxing card, or at least the first in many years, at the school, which also rents its 4,000-seat SEFCU Arena to rock concerts and other events when its teams aren't playing.
