--The Jays announced their 25-man roster after telling RHP Randy Wells and OF Buck Coats they had made the team. Wells is a Rule 5 draft pick from the Cubs organization, while Coats was acquired in the offseason in a trade with the Reds. Coats replaces injured 3B Scott Rolen, who is out at least three weeks with a displaced fracture of his right middle finger.
--RF Alex Rios and the Jays are working hard on being able to reach agreement on a multiyear contract extension before Opening Day. "It's getting close," Rios said of the extension that is said to be for six years and $65 million U.S. with a $15 million option for 2015. "It's the biggest decision I've ever made."
Rios, 27, who will earn $4,835,000 this season, has shown steady improvement in each of his past three seasons. Last year, Rios hit .297 with 43 doubles, 24 homers and 85 games in 161 games (643 at-bats).
--LHP B.J. Ryan is disappointed but not crestfallen over the fact he will remain in Florida for two to three weeks and miss the start of the regular season. Ryan is recovering from elbow ligament transfer surgery performed last May.
"I really thought I had a chance," Ryan said. "But you have to be realistic about the process. I feel good. I have to work on my arm strength."
BY THE NUMBERS 0 -- The number of home runs hit by DH Frank Thomas in his first 12 spring training games. The Jays are depending on Thomas to supply more power this year.
