Eric Chavez is spending three days in the Arizona desert before his scheduled rehab assignment with Class AAA Sacramento, which opens a homestand Thursday against Salt Lake.

Chavez is expected to be in a River Cats uniform, at first to be a designated hitter and then to work up his endurance as a third baseman.

Neither Chavez nor manager Bob Geren expects he'll join the A's on May 27, the first day he's eligible to come off the disabled list. But no one suggests it'll be much longer after that, barring setbacks.

Chavez did everything asked of him before Oakland's past three games in Texas. He did all baseball activity and topped it off Sunday by running the bases all out for the first time, and trainer Steve Sayles cleared him to play in games.

"It doesn't have to do with his back," Sayles said of Chavez's pursuit to get in baseball shape. "It has to do with playing the game."

For now, Chavez will participate in the A's extended spring training in Arizona.

(POLL) Now that Country Joe is now a Philly, who do you think should get the open spot in the rotation? And if you feel so inclined, why?

Personally, I like either Gio Gonzalez or Kirk Saarloos. Gonzalez has been doing okay in AAA and might be ready for some Show experience (since we are apparently looking beyond this season now) ...(more)

Okay, phew, we finally got through the losing streak; We are 9 GB of the seemingly unstoppable Angels. We are 6 GB of Boston for the Wild Card. We finish up with the Rays today, then we head back to face the Rangers and ...(more)

Well here we go, this 6-game homestand could determine which way the wind will blow for the remaining season. It may also determine Billy's next move(s).

3-games with Texas and  then 3-games with KC. We could get real healthy with a sweep or 5-of-6 for this homestand. The key will be starting against Texas in a better way than we have in the any of our other meetin ...(more)

Anybody else worried that if the Fremont move doesn't pan out; that they still might move the team> ? I am getting real nervous about the prospect of the A's leaving the Bay Area... but I hope that is just because I live far away, and don't really know what is going on.
