--RHP Kelvim Escobar said he has a tear in the labrum of his right shoulder, and he will consider season-ending surgery. Escobar has been dealing with shoulder pain since last September and recently discontinued his throwing program when the pain returned. Escobar said he would give the strengthening and rehab program he has been doing another few weeks before deciding whether to seek a second opinion from Mets team doctor David Altchek.
--RHP Justin Speier gave up a single to Cubs INF Luis Figueroa in the eighth inning of Wednesday's exhibition game at Tempe Diablo Stadium. It was the first baserunner Speier allowed this spring. He had retired 17 consecutive batters in Cactus League action before Figueroa's hit.
--RHP Scot Shields said he has resigned himself to the likelihood of opening the season on the disabled list. Shields has been set back twice this spring, first by a sore shoulder and more recently by tightness in his right forearm. He pitched just two innings in Cactus League games and probably will stay in Tempe at the team's extended spring camp for at least a week before rejoining the Angels. A back-dated DL move would allow Shields to miss just the first week of the season.
--OF Gary Matthews Jr.'s status for the season opener is uncertain after he suffered a sprained right ankle Monday. Matthews missed 10 games last September with a second-degree sprain of the same ankle but said the injury is not as serious this time. His status will be re-evaluated over the weekend.
--RHP Jered Weaver allowed one run on six hits in six innings against the Cubs on Wednesday in his final tune-up for the Opening Day start in Minnesota on Monday. Weaver finished the spring with just four runs allowed in 26 1/3 innings (1.37 ERA), 19 strikeouts and three walks. Weaver said Angels manager Mike Scioscia has yet to tell him he's starting Opening Day. "If it is me, it's a tremendous honor," Weaver said. "At the same time, it stinks that our two horses (John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar) are down."
BY THE NUMBERS 1,869 -- Hits by OF Vladimir Guerrero over the last 10 seasons. Only Derek Jeter (1,971) has more.
QUOTE TO NOTE "Take my word for it." -- RHP Scot Shields when asked why no one should be concerned by his sluggish start this spring.

word on the street is the tex is coming to then Angels for Quinlan and Wood. I like the trade personally but I would rather Kotchman then Tex. If we get Tex I think that will make Rivera expendable.
Angels start the second half with an impressive sweep of the Redsox. Lets keep it going against the Indians. Game one Evin Santana against Paul Byrd on paper this looks good for us.
Well it was a great game last night for Jeff Mathis. He finally threw out a runner at second and went yard with the game winner. Can you believe the Halo's have gotten 17 combined home runs out of the cather position? Which raised my curiosity and I wanted to find out whether the fans prefereed Napoli or
"Rodriguez, who burst on the scene during the Angels' run to the 2002 World Series, is making $10 million this year and he might push $15-16 million in a free-agent deal. Just imagine what another big postseason would do for his leverage at the negotiating
