Garret Anderson might be a free agent for the first time in his career, but he has obviously been paying attention.
Anderson has hired Scott Boras as his agent. The 36-year-old Anderson was represented by Chris Arnold for most of his career. After Anderson signed a four-year, $48 million contract extension in April 2004, there were changes in Arnold's agency, and Anderson opted to go without an agent the past few years.
With his future uncertain, Anderson has chosen the premier agent in baseball to represent him. Among Boras' clients are some of this winter's premier free agents -- Mark Teixeira, Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe, Ivan Rodriguez, Jason Varitek, Oliver Perez and others.
The extension Anderson signed in 2004 included an option for the 2009 season. Rather than pay Anderson a $14 million salary next season, the Angels bought out the option for $3 million, allowing him to become a free agent.
Angels GM Tony Reagins has said there might still be a role for Anderson with the Angels next season (but at a reduced salary). Anderson's hiring of Boras is a clear indication that the veteran outfielder still sees himself as an everyday player, not a role player.
Anderson, 36, hit .293 with 15 home runs and 84 RBIs (second on the team) in 2008.

According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Angels pitched Jon Garland "is leaning toward declining the Angels' salary arbitration offer by Sunday's deadline." Garland believes he can get more on the open market, according to Crasnick's source. If Garland leaves, the Angels will receive a supplemental draft pick.
Expect Pat Burrell to quickly become a player the Angels target if Mark Teixeira signs, as expected, with another team. Burrell is a much cheaper option than Teixeira and would move easily into the 1B, DH, LF mix with Kendry Morales and
