Any team ranked between 8 and 17 is perfectly capable of whupping any other on a given afternoon ... The Rangers generate a whole bunch of runs and allow even more. This has been the case since around 1999, which suggests that a change in roster-construction strategy might be at hand ... The nine-game road trip concludes with potentially hope-deflating visits to Chicago and Oakland this week.

Matt Harrison had a nice debut less than a year after he was among the key pieces in the Mark Teixeira trade. The No. 1 offense in baseball is just a few young pitchers away from having a sleeper contender.

They are still tied for the worst bullpen in baseball, but it is at least improving. They are a pretty amazing slugging team, which leads baseball in runs scored, and can get by with what they have in the pitching department. That makes them pretenders, but a fun club to watch if you like high-scoring games.

Manager Ron Washington has done a nice job getting himself off the hot seat. Also, the front office deserves credit for beating the Braves in the Mark Teixeira series last week. It is not quite two teams headed in different directions, but no one could have thought the Braves would be looking up to the Rangers after last July's Big Tex trade.

It is pretty laughable they dealt Mark Teixeira to the Braves and currently have a better record right now. Obviously, by our rankings, we don't think it will last, but they had to like sticking it to the Braves on Tuesday night.

Kudos to cutting the cord quickly on Sidney Ponson. You wouldn't figure a pitching-needy team to have the guts to do that, especially with their surprising flirtation with the .500 mark.

Josh Hamilton, a 27-year-old breakout player of the year, is slugging away like he is angry at the world. How could you blame him? This should have happened for him years ago.

It is pretty remarkable what they have done with a patchwork pitching staff. Only the Cubs, Phillies and Red Sox have scored more runs. Thank you, Mr. Josh Hamilton for becoming a superstar at age 27.

Who is this Vicente Padilla guy and what have you done with the pitcher formerly known as Vicente Padilla? Besides a league-worst bullpen (5.11 ERA), the rebuilding Rangers have made some progress on the mound -- even if it is temporary upticks by veterans.

They have gotten surprising pitching from unlikely sources of late, so they deserve to move up right now. If not for a putrid relief ERA of 5.72, the worst in the league by almost a full run, their overall pitching numbers wouldn't be so bad. Baby steps.
