At this time last season, they were baseball's fresh-faced darlings. No, really, they were. You can look it up ... Some regression to the mean had to be expected, but nearly every player not named Matt, Brad or Ubaldo disappointed ... They have four legit starters and a nice morsel of trade bait in Garrett Atkins (to the Yankees for some pitching?), but Brian Fuentes will flee via free agency and Holliday's expiring contract will fuel 720,000 rumors. Difficult decisions lie ahead.

Brian Fuentes will prove a much better free-agent signing than Francisco Rodriguez. He'll come at one-quarter of the cost and continue to traumatize lefty hitters.

That Livan Hernandez experiment didn't last too long. ... The team's September batting average is a lowly .212, despite having played 10 of 13 games at Coors Field. ... Matt Holliday's power numbers may be down a touch, but he's made up for it -- at least in the eyes of fantasy baseball loyalists -- with the 27 steals in 28 tries.

Isn't it charming how Rockies fans look at their 6.5-game deficit in the division standings and think, "Gosh, pa, we were five games out at this time last year! It could happen again!" No, Junior, it couldn't. Accept last year's run for what it was -- a brilliant fluke -- and accept that Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are mere hallucinations. ... Me, I'd place a whole bunch of the blame for this season's pratfall at the feet of Jeff Francis (a lesser pitcher in every way that matters) and Troy Tulowitzki (who took a page out of the Carl Pavano injury-recovery handbook).

I hear nothing but nice things about Dexter Fowler, who should arrive in town tonight for an audition and render Willy Tavares redundant before too long ... I can't decide if Jorge De La Rosa is any good or whether he's another in the long line of pitchers who has found the NL more to his liking than the AL.

At 8-2 in their last 10, they're the hottest team in the NL West, which is a lot like being the hottest girl at dental college. ... Ian Stewart has put up some impressive numbers (.973 OPS) in his 177 at-bats. If he's the real thing, the Rockies can set about trading Garrett Atkins for pitching help.

They're 57-69 and yet only a half-game further out of first place than the 70-57 Cardinals. This offends my senses of decency and fair play.
| 08/12/2008 | 23 | 20 |
They lost three of four at home to the Nationals and allowed 16 runs in a single game to the Padres. In doing so, they killed dead any thoughts of a 2007-ish resurgence and heaped great shame upon their families. Let's move on.

The Nationals and Padres come to town this week. Anything less than five wins should be considered an indictment of their emotional well-being. ... Aaron Cook has to rank near the top of the list of guys to whom we don't give enough credit. Monday night was only the third time in 24 starts in 2008 that he didn't throw six innings or more.
| 07/29/2008 | 19 | 22 |
They are 8-2 in their past 10 and 28-22 in their past 50. Given the Dodgers and D-Backs have been engaging in overt acts of self-sabotage, I can't see why the Rockies would punt on 2008. ... I just sent Ubaldo Jimenez a fruit basket to apologize for having dismissed him after that brutal start. No hard feelings, guy.
