Jeter in Yanks lineup day after getting plunked on hand

NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter was in the New York Yankees' lineup Wednesday against Baltimore, one night after getting hit on the left hand by a pitch.

"I'm fine," the star shortstop said. "Everything's good."

In other injury news, Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang has a mild strain of his right calf but is not expected to miss a turn in the rotation.

Jeter left Tuesday night's 12-2 loss to the Orioles in the third inning when he was plunked by right-hander Daniel Cabrera. X-rays were negative, and Jeter was considered day to day with a bruised hand.

"I feared the worst when he got hit last night because it was a loud noise," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "We were fortunate."

Jeter was penciled in to play shortstop and bat second Wednesday against Baltimore lefty Garrett Olson.

"I'll watch him in BP to see if he's favoring anything," Girardi said, "but I don't expect to see anything."

Wang said he tweaked his calf while covering first base in the seventh inning of Sunday night's loss to the New York Mets. He went to the hospital Wednesday for an MRI exam and said he's glad there's nothing to be concerned about.

"There's a bruise," Wang said. "I'll be fine."

Pending his bullpen session Thursday, Wang is still scheduled to make his next start Saturday against the Seattle Mariners. The right-hander is 6-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 10 starts this year after winning 19 games each of the past two seasons.

This and A-Rod's return are about the only two good things that have happened for Yankees-fan in a while... any guesses how far back from 1st in the division they'll fall before rallying to comeback and make the playoffs?

We just got crushed by the Orioles last night. THE ORIOLES!!!!!! Derek Jeter, the captain of this team, sees how his team is playing, and knows they really need to turn things around fast- so he will be playing through hi injury tonight, like a true captain. This is a grea ...(more)
