Mets place infielder Gotay on waivers

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The New York Mets placed infielder Ruben Gotay on waivers Thursday.

That means Gotay, out of minor league options, will have to wait until Friday to see whether he will resume his career with the Mets. If Gotay clears waivers, the Mets would be free to reassign him to Triple-A New Orleans. If he is claimed by another team, the Mets could pull him back off waivers and try to make a trade to fill a need.

"I thought I did a good job last year. I didn't think I deserved this," the 25-year-old Gotay said with tears in his eyes as he sat in front of his locker.

Gotay hit .295 with four home runs and 24 RBI for the Mets last season, filling in after second baseman Jose Valentin was injured. But the Mets traded for second baseman Luis Castillo, then signed Castillo to a long-term deal the offseason.

Last season, Gotay hit just .181 from against lefties and .318 against righties, which may have led the Mets to lean toward keeping the right-handed hitting Fernando Tatis, who batted .276 with 21 home runs and 67 RBI at Triple-A last season.

Meanwhile catcher Ramon Castro is likely to start the season on the disabled list because of a strained hamstring. Raul Cassanova is the leading candidate to take Castro's spot on the roster.
