Cactus roundup: Jays' reject Johnson impresses in Cubs' debut

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Reed Johnson was an immediate hit in his Chicago Cubs debut.

Two days after he was released by Toronto, Johnson agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract with the Cubs and then got two hits, including a double, and scored twice Tuesday in a 7-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

"I had three days off and to play a full nine innings, it's good to get all the flight out of me," Johnson said. "You guys don't know how happy I am to be here."

Rich Hill followed his worst spring training outing with his best, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Hill walked six and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings against the Colorado Rockies last Thursday. He adjusted his delivery afterward, leveling his shoulders to help his control.

Hill let one ball get away, a fastball that cut in on Aaron Rowand and hit him in the right shin. Rowand left the game as a precaution.

Rowand, the Giants' biggest free-agent signing during the offseason, singled in his first at-bat and is hitting .321 this spring with two home runs and 10 RBI. He's expected to play in Wednesday's game at Triple-A Fresno. Full story

Royals 8, Padres 4

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Justin Germano took the loss and still helped his cause.

After being called a leading candidate to fill out the back end of San Diego's rotation by manager Bud Black, the right-hander followed that with five strong innings before yielding five runs -- three were unearned -- in his final inning in the Padres' loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Germano, 7-10 with a 4.46 ERA for the Padres last season, allowed six total runs -- two earned -- in 5 1/3 innings.

"I think they're pretty good," Germano said of his chances to win the job. "I haven't got any official word, but this is probably the best spring I've had."

Dodgers 3, Brewers 3

PHOENIX -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have played exhibition games in Florida, China and Arizona this year. They're finally headed home to California.

Brad Penny was wild but effective, and the Dodgers concluded the Arizona portion of their spring training journey with a tie against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Dodgers, who face the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday, tied the score on Blake DeWitt's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning off Dave Bush.

Los Angeles manager Joe Torre informed Milwaukee manager Ned Yost that he was out of pitchers after Mike Myers got the final out in the bottom of the ninth.

Rangers 5, Mariners 1

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Milton Bradley's surgically repaired right knee passed a major test.

Bradley, making his first start in right field this spring, tripled and handled two chances during the first four innings of the Texas Rangers' win over the Seattle Mariners.

"He looked awesome," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.

Bradley, limited to designated-hitter duty since making his Cactus League debut Friday, was replaced by Nelson Cruz in the top of the fifth.

White Sox 5, Rockies 2

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Mark Buehrle made crisp pitches and his command was pinpoint in leading the Chicago to a win over the Colorado Rockies. The White Sox snapped a nine-game winless streak.

Rockies manager Clint Hurdle was hoping his young lefty, Franklin Morales, was paying close attention to Buehrle's performance. If not, he's going to make him watch a video.

It could be just the teaching tool that Morales, a 22-year-old hard throwing lefty, needs.

For four innings, Morales pitched like the Rockies had envisioned, limiting the White Sox to just two hits. But he became unhinged in the fifth, allowing all four of his runs.

Angels 9, Diamondbacks 8

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Brandon Webb allowed five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, giving up ten hits and throwing two wild pitches in the Diamondbacks' loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

Webb, the 2006 National League Cy Young winner, now has an 8.50 earned run average through 18 innings this spring. He is scheduled to be the Diamondbacks starter on opening day at Cincinnati.

Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer for Arizona, and Conor Jackson went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Howie Kendrick was 3-for-3 for Los Angeles.
