PHOENIX -- Injured Dodgers stars Nomar Garciaparra and Jeff Kent participated in drills Monday and their availability for the season opener remained uncertain.
Kent, sidelined since March 5 with a strained right hamstring, took batting practice and fielded grounders. The 40-year-old second baseman also ran sprints and around the edge of the infield, as if running the bases.
Garciaparra, who has a broken bone in his right hand, participated in defensive drills and took groundballs. The Los Angeles third baseman hasn't played since being hit by a pitch March 7.
There was no announcement about whether Kent and Garciaparra will be able to play in next Monday's opener against the San Francisco Giants.
Closer Takashi Saito was held back from making the trip to Surprise to pitch in Monday night's game against Kansas City because of tightness in his right buttocks. Saito first felt the tightness Sunday, but a team official said the injury was not serious and that Saito could have pitched if necessary.
