OF Ryan Church and Mets agree to $2 million, 1-year deal, avoiding arbitration

NEW YORK (AP) -Ryan Church and the New York Mets avoided an arbitration hearing, agreeing Thursday to a $2 million, one-year contract.

Church is slated to be the team's regular right fielder this season after he was acquired in November from Washington with catcher Brian Schneider for outfielder Lastings Milledge.

Last year with the Nationals, Church batted .272 with 15 homers, 70 RBIs and 43 doubles. After making $395,000 last season, he asked for $2.45 million in arbitration while the Mets offered $1.75 million.

He can earn an additional $120,000 in performances bonuses: $50,000 for 450 plate appearances; $40,000 for 535 plate appearances and $30,000 for 550 plate appearances.

The Mets have one player remaining in arbitration: pitcher Oliver Perez.
