The Sports Xchange reports that manager Jim Leyland held Sheffield out of the lineup Wednesday night at Kansas City and said when Sheffield returns Thursday it will be as Detroit's designated hitter. And that's how it will remain, with one interleague exception. "With the physical considerations and trying to get the bat going, the longer I think about, it doesn't make sense (to play Sheffield out there)," Leyland said. However, Leyland will have Sheffield in left field for one of the three interleague contests in Arizona this weekend. (Updated 05/15/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Sheffield made five starts in the outfield, which is enough to regain him eligibility there in most Fantasy formats. Now that he has it back, Fantasy owners should actually prefer to have him DH in order to preserve him over the long-haul. Expect Matt Joyce to see the starts in left field for the time being. Sheffield lasted just five games as a left fielder, shifting to designated hitter when the Detroit Tigers faced the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. (Updated 05/15/2008)
Advice
Sheffield, who did not play Wednesday, had right shoulder surgery during the offseason to repair a labral tear. His throwing remains restricted. Sheffield entered with a .202 average, two home runs and eight RBIs. He has been a DH in 25 games. With the Tigers playing this weekend at Arizona in interleague play, Detroit will lose its DH.
