Troy Tulowitzki was feeling on top of the world after a fabulous first season that netted him a rich new contract. Now, the Colorado Rockies' slick-fielding shortstop is wondering why he can't catch a break. He started the season mired in a slump and then tore a tendon in his left quadriceps Tuesday night -- an injury that could sideline him until the All-Star break. "Sometimes you ask yourself, 'Why is this happening?"' Tulowitzki said Friday. "It just goes to show, never get too high." Tulowitzki doesn't think surgery will be necessary. But he's not sure how long he'll be sidelined, either. "I don't think anybody knows at this point and time," Tulowitzki said. "Time will tell." The Rockies officially placed him on the 15-day DL. Saturday. (Updated 05/03/2008).
Injury Report
Quadriceps - 15-day DL. Out until at least late July (Updated - 5/4/08)
Fantasy Analysis
Tulowitzki injured his quad while charging a grounder in the first inning at San Francisco. He felt a "tweak" as he tried to make an off-balance throw. The 23-year-old Tulowitzki injured the same quad muscle while playing for Class A Modesto in 2005. He said it wasn't the same injury -- this one was higher up on the quad. "It's obviously sore," said Tulowitzki, who underwent an MRI exam on Wednesday, which found a complete tear of the tendon near his hip. "I'm able to walk and people are surprised with that. I'm getting around OK." This is not the way it was supposed to play out for Tulowitzki. He inks a big deal in the offseason, then slumps to begin the season and finally suffers a devastating injury. It has been anything but a fairy tale story for him in 2008. Despite a .152 average, Tulowitzki is a viable Fantasy SS when healthy. (Updated 05/03/2008).
Tulowitzki suffered a torn tendon in his left quadriceps and could be out until the All-Star break if not longer, his agent said Thursday. "Best case scenario is six weeks. The realistic one is a few months," agent Paul Cohen told The Associated Press. (Updated 05/01/2008)
Advice
Cohen said team doctors will have a better feel for a timeline in a week after swelling and bleeding subside. Tulowitzki, the runner-up for NL rookie of the year last season, when he led the Rockies to their first World Series, was injured Tuesday night at San Francisco and underwent an MRI on Wednesday.
