John Maine became the first New York Mets starter this year to reach the eighth inning, taking a shutout into the ninth Wednesday during a 12-1 rout of Brad Penny and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Penny (5-3) allowed 10 runs in 4 2/3 innings, the most off him in 236 career big league starts. He gave up 10 hits for the third time in eight starts this season. Penny fell behind 4-0 in the second when former-Dodger Marlon Anderson hit an RBI single, Raul Casanova followed with a two-run single and Luis Castillo added a two-out RBI single. Carlos Beltran led off the third with a single and scored New York's fifth run on Angel Pagan's groundout. The Mets blew it open with a six-run fifth that equaled a season high for runs in an inning. Penny walked three and struck out two. (Updated 05/07/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Penny's ERA jumped from 3.19 to 4.79 after Wednesday's debacle. It also ended a four-game winning streak for the right-hander. Penny had allowed a total of seven earned runs during that span. Chalk up Wednesday's outing as an abberration for Penny. He doesn't have many awful games, and wins more often than not. Penny is still a high-end Fantasy SP as the Dodgers' ace. His next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Brewers. He is on track to be a two-start pitcher Fantasy Week 7 (May 12-18) with his second start coming against the Angels. Both starts are on the road where Penny is 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA in three starts this season. (Updated 05/07/2008).
Penny won his fourth straight start on Friday, as the visiting Dodgers beat Colorado, 11-6. (Updated 05/03/2008)
Advice
