Astros SP Chris Sampson had another rough day on the mound Thursday against the Giants. Sampson survived for six innings despite allowing seven runs (five earned) and 10 hits. He didn't issue a walk and surprisingly didn't allow a homer. He struck out three and would have taken the loss had Houston not rallied from a 6-0 deficit. (Updated 05/15/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Sampson looked nothing short of awful after coming off a brilliant start against the Dodgers in which he pitched seven shutout innings. Sampson has now allowed five or more runs in three of his last four starts. It might only be a matter of time before he is replaced in the rotation. Sampson remains a risky NL-only Fantasy SP. His next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Cubs. He is on track to be a two-start pitcher Fantasy Week 8 (May 19-25) with his second start coming against the Phillies. Both starts are at home where Sampson is 0-2 with a 15.75 ERA this season. (Updated 05/15/2008).
Sampson pitched three-hit ball over seven innings in a 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. (Updated 05/11/2008)
Advice
Sampson was hopeful that this kind of outing could turn his season around. "I had a nice heart-to-heart talk with (Astros bench coach) Jackie Moore, because I played for him at Round Rock in ???06 and he saw me pitch a lot," said Sampson, who was 1-3 with a 7.96 ERA in his first six starts. "I asked him his thoughts on what was the difference between Round Rock and now, and that helped out tremendously???as well as figuring out what I was doing wrong mechanically."
