On the flip side, the Mets have actually had a great trade go their way. How about a nobody 2nd string catcher named Ed Hearn for some guy by the name of David Cone.
Minaya seems to be a good judge of talent no matter what people say. He had good sense enough to unload the likes of Loduca, Milledge, and Mota. Loduca and Mota both costs the Mets last years division in the final two weeks alone. Mota blew 2 games in late September and Loduca was a double play machine most of the season, especially in the clutch. The pick-up of Church and Schneider for Milledge looks like a steal on his part. The Santana deal was a no brainer as well.
I think it's time for Minaya to part ways with Heilman, just like it was a great move to unload Sosa and Figueroa. . He blew tonight's game for them and he, along with Sosa are probably the difference between the Mets being 2 games over .500 and 8 games over. The long reliever became an achillies heal for the Mets last year (Sele and Sosa) and this year and it's time to fix that problem. Maybe when Martinez and El Duque return, Pelfrey can step into the role. If it's at the expense of unloading Heilman I'd be the 1st one to make the move. He can still bring in a good reliever or at the least a prospect or two and could become a starter on a half dozen teams starving for pitching. He has great stuff (most of the time) but he wasn't made to pitch in NY for some reason. The Mets never had the confidence in him to make him a starter again after his dismal rookie season and maybe there's greener pastures for him in another city. Either way, if the Mets can fix that problem they'd be looking a whole lot better these days.
