It is not uncommon, especially for pitchers, for a player who is tearing up AA to get called up tp the majors. Daryl Thompson has a 1.45 ERA and is striking out better than one per inning and for every walk he surrenders, he strikes out 6! I believe that's the definition of tearing it up. There's all kinds of talk about bringing up Homer Bailey, but I want to see what this kid can do. It isn't as if he's 19 and we'd be rushing him, he's 22. That's a pretty standard age nowadays for good players to join the major league ranks. This kid throws strikes and has gone less than 6 innings just once, and that was a 5.2 inning outing. Let's see what he can do.

Another minor league pitcher I'd like to see in a Reds uniform not named Homer Bailey is Matt Maloney. He started the season horrible but has been much much better his last 2 times out. He came within 2 outs of throwing a no-hitter today, hopefully he gets the call sooner than later.

Thompson was scheduled tonight against Carolina.
Roenicke is showing some stuff down there as well.

I hesitate to bring a kid up from AA. I would definitely bring him up to Louisville for a spell first and see what he could do there. AA ball is definitely not the majors. If you bring this kid up too fast and he gets smacked around, it could really affect him for the worse. I think this happened to Bailey a little bit when he started with the Reds and has not really recovered from it.

In general though, isnt it nice to be able to talk about all the young arms we have in the minors? It's great! Bailey, Thompson, Maloney, Roenicke, etc.... We havent had that many arms in how long? To go along with Volquez and Cueto. Things are looking good for the future rotation. That is if Dusty doesnt trade for Mark Prior or Glenden Rusch.

Tough outing for Thompson, as he walked 4 hitters in just 6 innings, but like great pitchers do, he worked around them and did not allow an earned run, leaving the game with a 6-1 lead and lowering his already miniscule ERA from 1.45 to 1.28. Call him up. At least to AAA.

In order to move him up you got to move a player ahead of him and the AAA rotation is set.  What isn't set is Matt Belisle and Josh Fogg and one of these people are going to be traded or cut in order to make room for Bailey.  Then Darryl Thompson will be promoted to AAA.  I have never seen the Reds have some many pitchers that are capable and have tons of potential.

Belisle is a disaster so I don't think I'd miss him.  I'm pretty excited for our pitching in the coming years.  I definitely think Cueto is going to turn into an ace.  He is a little inconsistent right now but we all know his stuff is nasty when he's on.  He just needs to get past those rookie year jitters I think.
