So Rich Harden has a horrible first four innings against the Rangers today. I don't know about you guys, but it's time we drop this guy. He makes a single digit amount of times in a year and after the way he pitched today, he's not worth wasting another year on. I have lost my patience with him. Anyone else feel the same?

Did he re-injure his shoulder today, or was he just yanked because he stunk??

Rich Harden was not pulled because of injury. He had control issues and that led to his pitch count hitting 90 in the fourth inning. Bob Geren had said that would be Harden's limit today, as the Athletics didn't want to overwork him and risk re-injury, so he was pulled. We will not know how Harden is doing and if he is still 100% until we find out how he is feeling tomorrow and Tuesday.

Does anyone know when Rich Harden is up for Free Agency becuase that is very important on how i look at this one. If we still have him locked up for 3 or more years then yes i would probably keep him at least for a couple more years. But then agian trading him might still be the best move if you can get value out of him.
If he is a free agent in 2009 or 2010 then i would not hesitate for a second to trade him during the offseason if he was fully healthy for the rest of the year. IMO Harden is not going to hold up for very long. This kid is Mark Prior Jr. Tons of Talent but cant stay on the mound long enough to really show it. People are still taking a risk on Prior every year just becuase of that raw talent and while i really do hope im wrong, i think Harden will eventually end up the same way.

Yo Big Pappa, this is what we owe on the oft injured RHP.
Rich Harden rhp
4 years/$9M (2005-08), plus $7M 2009 club option
- $1M signing bonus
- 05:$0.5M, 06:$1M, 07:$2M, 08:$4.5M, 09:$7M club option (no buyout)
- escalators based on IP
- signed extension 4/05, replacing 1 year/$0.3365M for 2005 signed 3/05
- ML service: 4.074
Note: I don't understand why people are so down on the oft injured right hander. Everyone keeps comparing him to Mark Prior and Kerry Wood as wasted talent but nobody once states that Prior(#2 overall) and Wood (#4 overall) were 1st rounders.
The oft injured right hander was drafted in like round 100. I think what ever we get out of him, is a bonus. I just don't want the team base any future success on his health.
BTW, Someone asked earlier in another post if Lew Wolf was the majority owner of the Athletics.
That answer is no. John Fisher of SF Based Gap Clothing is the majority owner of the A's. There must be some rule in Baseball that will not allow Fisher day to day controls because of his current status as CEO of GAP, Bananna Republic, Old Navy and some shoe place.

Actually no i dont feel that way on this one. Harden is not really Hurting us at all. He is way to good to just be cut from the team. He had one bad outing (mind you his first one back) and your ready to axe him lol. I will agree that he is injury prone but when he has pitched he has been really good and when hes hurt stick him on the DL and bring Guadin back into the rotation. If he stays healthy trade him while you can. But dropping him would not be a good move.

I would like us to give him a few more starts (if he can go a few starts without getting hurt) and let him get back in the groove and then trade him.
We obviously have enough pitching without him, so if he can return to form and then we can trade him for a few more prospects, then I'd be all for that. We already have a very good farm system thanks to Arizona and Chicago, so if we could get another high-level guy or two for Harden then we'd have a very pretty future.

I disagree strongly with recommendations to trade Harden.
First off, even if he makes 6 straight quality healthy starts no team would give us anything of real value for him. In order for him to have any trade value at all he will have to finish out the rest of this season. If he can do that though, who would really want to give him up? Ask anyone who is actually in the baseball world and they will tell you Rich Harden's stuff is better than anyone else that they have seen. Honestly now, if you have the best pitcher, literally the best, what is good enough return on a trade? He is better than Dan Haren and look the returns we got from that trade. Greg Smith and Dana Eveland are already contributing solidly in the majors and we still have 4 more top notch prospects (Aaron Cunningham, Carlos Gonzalez, etc.) making their way through the minors. No one would give us what a healthy Harden is worth because no one HAS what he is worth. How many teams could even offer us an identical trade to what we got for Haren?
Secondly, If we trade away Rich Harden who becomes our true "ace"? Who would we have that you would give the advantage to when matching up against ANY other pitcher in the league? Justin Duchscherer is great and I think he has the potential to be good | |
