We all understand the need for another veteran OG on our squad this year. Someone who can fill in right away and provide quality protection for our run and pass game. I'm thinking someone like Shane Olivea would fill in nicely for the Bears and their "run first" attitude next year.
Olivea was apart of that high-powered Chargers offense with LT in the backfield. Olivea was a first-day draft prospect of the Miami Dolphins in 2004, but tore his pectoral muscle in pre-draft workouts. The Chargers got a STEAL in the 7th round on this guy and he produced.
The Jets were interested in him, but seem to be moving towards Damien Woody (I keep up with MANY teams ). The reason the Chargers releases him was because of his contract (6yr, 20 million; signed in 2006), the development of Jeromey Clary, and worry about a few back injuries he sustained.
I think the guy can play... and would do well here in Chicago. Move Roberto Garza to RG and plug Olivea in at LG. Making your line of Williams, Olivea, Kruetz, Garza, and Tait with Beekman in the wings (who is getting trained and taught bu Kreutz).
Thoughts?

To be honest Marine, I'm surprised that they haven't at least talked to him. He started all but one game for the Chargers from 2004-2006 and had 10 more starts in 2007. He's young, experienced, and he was part of an excellent O-line. At worst he'd be a great insurance policy. I suspect that Josh Beekman is being counted on to play at LG this year but I'd welcome any move that will improve the Bears depth.
As for the Jets.................. they already locked Woody up (5 years and $25 million - what a joke). I think he is washed up though. He was awful the last couple of years in Detroit and I can't see him getting any better.
The Bears should sign Olivea.

I'm curious about why he got cut by the Chargers. Was it a salary cap issue, injury, ineffectiveness or some other reason?

Shane Olivea was cut because he asked the Chargers to do it. He has been injured in the past, and was demoted to second string because of the emergence of a younger player, that's why he wanted to be released, so that he could have a shot at starting for another team. I've been on him since the day before free agency started, and have been lobbying for the Bears to get him for months. We'll see if they follow through or not.

I think Shane Olivea has enough experience and he's still young enough, so he could shore up LG position for years.
I was a fan of his signing since the FA started also, but he may ask too much money (Bears still have to resign guys like Tommie Harris, Robbie Gould, Devin Hester, maybe even Mark Anderson and renegotiate contract with Brian Urlacher, so they can't allow big cap hit by signing FA guard), and Bears have very good depth at guard positions (there is great quantity, but quality is a suspect, just like at WR position).
And to remind you, he played RT in San Diego, so it's a question would he be willing to play guard with Bears.
So considering all that, I'm not so confident JA (ie. cheap Bears management) will sign Shane Olivea, although, he would be an instant upgrade over Bears current players at guard positions.
In conclusion, this O-line would look much better:
Williams - Olivea - Kreutz - Garza - Tait
than this:
Williams - St.Clair (Beekman) - Kreutz - Garza - Tait

Sounds like a guy that could be an instant impact on this team. If we are going to turn this thing around, we need another lineman and more specifically a guard. We didnt answer that in FA. I can only hope that the Bears flat out release Benson. I believe Forte is going to be a good back in the NFL and better than people think. But, no one will be good if we dont strengthen our line.

I have been saying that hte Bears should grab him since the start of FA.
The guy can play RT or LG.
If for some reason Chris Williams cant handle LT or gets injured John Tait can go back to the left side and Shane Olivea can either go to RT or LG with John St. Clair going to the other spot.
He gives the flexibility to fill in at a couple of spots.
The only question is how much money does he want? I would offer him a one or two year contract at least so that he can come in and show what he can do.

I would agree nolovie the flexibility of Shane Olivea to come in and play guard or tackle would be very interesting not to mention what it could do for the depth chart. When you think about it, we really don't know what we have in Josh Beekman and in Chris Williams even less. It seems like its JA's ultimate goal is to built the line from the draft, and thats why it makes perfect sense to offer him only a one or two year contract to giving his rookies a little time to devel | |
