I was reading an article today by Bradd Biggs and he was saying that contract talks for Robbie Gould could get pricey.
The Bears have been in talks with Gould’s agent Brian Mackler since last season. He’s got big ambitions, and you can’t blame him. The Bears believe in getting a break when they give a player a contract early, even if it’s just one year premature. The club can dangle the franchise tag over Gould’s head in negotiations. But until defensive tackle Tommie Harris comes to agreement, who do you think would receive the more prohibitive franchise tag come next February? There’s no doubt it would be Harris. But general manager Jerry Angelo could still slap the transition tag on Gould.
What’s the price range? Josh Brown received the largest contract given to a kicker this spring when the Rams signed him to a $14.2 million, five-year deal with a $4 million signing bonus to come over from division rival Seattle in free agency. Adam Vinatieri picked up $3.5 million to sign with Indianapolis in a $12 million, five-year contract. Buffalo gave Rian Lindell $2.75 million up front on a $9 million, five-year deal. There’s a range to consider.
Looking at the range of kickers in the league (near the bottom of the box), do you think its possible Robbie Gould might be TOO HIGH for the Bears to acquire any time soon? Will the signing of Gould push Brad Maynard out the door (He also has a very high-contract). Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that the transition tag falls under the franchise tag category, in that you can only designate one player per year. So I don't think that the Bears can franchise Tommie and transition Robbie in the same season, I believe that's what you're trying to say, right? Personally, and I don't think I'm alone here, but I'd MUCH rather get Tommie finalized with a long-term deal and slap the franchise tag on Robbie, I mean, who else will we use it on, John St. Clair? LOL. Devin is signed thru 2009 and Url is signed thru 2011, so it's not absolutely imperative that we deal with them immediately.
As good as Robbie's been, I don't think he is yet worth Vinatieri money, and Josh Brown is definitely not worth Josh Brown money, like so many other overpaid NFL players. I wouldn't mind the Bears giving Robbie a deal similar to Rian Lindell's, maybe a little higher, and make it a cool $10 mill over 5 years. No matter what, I'll trust that Stein and Angelo make the decision that's best for the franchise, for now, and for down the road. Good topic.

tooljunkie-- The "quoted" box comes from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune and each team is allowed the option to place a franchise tag OR a transition tag on any player of their choice each offseason. The difference being in the money and rules of the contract.
An "exclusive" franchise tag is not free to sign with another club. He is offered a minimum of the average of the TO FIVE salaries at the player's position or 120% of whatever his salary was the year before (whichever is greater).
The transition tag offers the average TOP TEN salaries, making the price a lot more affordable. Especially in the case of a kicker... hence Biggs stated that the Bears could place the transistion tag on Gould if they can't reach a deal. The drop from the top 3 kickers to the 4-10 kicker in the NFL is huge. His salary would range somewhere around $1.45 million for a year. Then they can look to resign him in 2009.
With the Bears offense not looking to be TOUCHDOWN laden, I thinks its IMPERATIVE that you have a sure footed kicker from 35-45 yds out. I'm not saying that Robbie Gould should get Adam Vinateri or Rian Lidell money, but I think he is worth top ten money. that's probably NO MORE than $2 million a year. What's so bad about that for a great kicker?

Robbie Gould is a steady kicker in spite of half the games being played in Soldier Field, some times you have to pick your poison, because you can't keep everyone happy. Is he worth the added expense to put points on the board or are you convinced because of the addition of some big bodies Kellen Davis, and Marcus Monk, our redzone offense will improve. After all he could be the difference maker in those close games, but then it's more important that the O and the D to keep them close. Hmmmm

Tunafat, even if Marcus Monk and Kellen Davis dont help us out in the red zone that still has little impact on the kicker. Even if we got into the red zone and didnt gain a yard from the 19, that would still be a 36 yard field goal. Any kicker should be automatic on kicks less than 40 yards. In Soldier Field it is a little more tricky, but a kicker should be able to adjust after a little practice there. Kickers make their money on the kicks further out.

I'm friends with Billy Cundiff, we played together at Drake. The year before I got there, he tied an NCAA record with a 62-yard field goal, and he cleared it by at least 7-8 yards. You can look it up, I've seen the video many times. Actually, the reason why it went so far was because it was a line-drive squib, wasn't even that great of a kick, in terms of rotation, (it looked like a wounded duck) but it just kept going. I guess my point is, as much as it pains me to say it, what's he doing now? Distance does not get you a roster spot, accuracy does, always has.

Highly doubt it. IMHO paying a kicker in Chicago that kind of money is a waste. He's pretty accurate however he doesn't have great leg strength. Heck, we can probably pick up Robbie Gould's little brother and get the same kind of production.
