It won't happen this month.  The way it works is Nadal is defending points he won last year.  He won this tournament last year so he wont move up any.  Federer on the other hand lost in the 3rd round here last year.  He is now in the third round so if he wins one or two more he will put more distance between himself and Rafa.  In Hamburg last year Federer beat Nadal so that is where he could lose some points.  He could also lose points at Rolland Garros.  They met in the finals last year.  Nadal would have to win in order to keep up and hope Roger loses before the final in order to make up ground.  Nadal's best hope to make up ground is for Roger to lose early in France and at Wimbledon.  Even then there is a long way to go.

Excellent post bluecollar. Nadal can't catch Roger unless Roger continues to lose. Both have a lot of points to defend. Rafa's best chance to catch Roger will be at the US Open if Roger can play anywhere near his usual performance, he will hold his lead as Rafa HAS to defend maximum points at every tournament between now and the hard court season. I just don't see rafa catching Roger as the hard courts obviously bother his knees and aren't his best surface and are Roger's best surface. Unless Rafa gets some help, I think he will go down in History as the greatest #2 ranked player of all time. He may be younger than Roger, but I feel that Rafa's style of play is so demanding physically and with Djokovic's emergence, that Rafa's body will break down on him by the time Federer is irrelevent and Novak will steal enough hard court points to keep Rafa from reaching #1. Now after Federer loses in the first round at the French and Wimbledon, everyone can say I told you so.

AS I type, I'm watching Rafa go down in flames to JC Ferrero. Match isn't quite over and Rafa's not going to quit, but if Ferrero holds his serve this last time, the question posted in this thread becomes moot. Djokovic won today and if Rafa loses this early, I think the relevent question is new #2 by the end of the month?

Nadal just got smoked by Ferrero 7-5, 6-1. Nadal had physical problems with blisters on his feet. He has a history of foot problems, one of the reasons  don't think his career will be very lenghty. Federer has a real chance to stretch the gap between he and Rafa and Djokovic is definitely going to be close to Rafa if he reaches the final. Big, Big points hit for Nadal.

Yeah, this thread just got shot down in flames with Rafa's loss. What did they say, 105 match streak on clay broken right?

Getting blisters happens to everyone, but you say he has had other foot problems fans66? I don't remember hearing that. What kind?

Early in his career, nike started custom fitting his shoes for him. He missed the French Open when he was 17 dealing with this. He also hurt himself that spring when he went to jump the net after a match and caught his foot. I don't think he's ever had foot surgery, but he does have ongoing foot issues.
