An excerpt taken from a CBS Sportsline story about Steelers RBs Parker and Mendenhall:

Mendenhall is disappointed that, since he left school, his older brother was effectively told he wasn't wanted back at Illinois and will transfer to Illinois State as a fifth-year senior.

"Yeah, it upset me but, to tell you the truth, the way things were there, it didn't surprise me too much," Rashard Mendenhall said. "They were just never in our favor there."

I'm not really sure what to make of this statement.  Caught me as a bit of a surprise.  Does he think he has his bother weren't treated very well while at Illinois?  Did Zooker's staff bring in Walter just to get Rashard to agree to join him here?

Any thoughts fellow Illinois fans?

hellrzr,

I was thinking the same thing too. I don't know what's up now or what. I heard that there were issues with Walter and Illinois because of his obvious lack of playing time, but I didn't know that he would or is transferring to ISU.

Is there any article anywhere about his leaving?

I've said all along that when you're not a USC or a Tosu or a Florida or Notre Dame, sometimes you have to use the buddy system.

Walter and Rashard were a package deal I believe. Who was Regus Benn's best friend on his HS team? Nate Bussey whom we signed first.

Now we are in a position where we don't have to do that anymore (our 2009 class is shaping up to be a MONSTER - we haven't heard the last of M.F.).

From what I'm reading there's A LOT then went on with the Mendenhall story. Walter never got a fair shake; the Mendenhall's Mom was ALWAYS in the coaches business; they asked Walter to play full back this season and he said no; why did Rashard have to wait so long to be the featured back - was it just his fumbling problem? Man, it's really hard to know where the truth really is on this one.

Hopefully it gets worked out. Having a high profile stud like Mendenhall come back for games and be seen by future recruits is no small deal.

Sad to see Walter go, but hopefully he'll get his playing time.  I personally believe they recruited Walter to get at Rashard.  It's the way the game is played unfortunately...

You know what they say, don't hate the game..........

So long as RM can keep from being mugged, the Mendenhall family will be alright.

Not at all 2nd2n.

It's slow going right now for us in actual commits at the moment, and Penn. St. has some great momentum lately, but we're in the mix with A LOT of 4 and 5 star talent and even though we missed on Eric Shrive, talk of 5 star Ohio stud OT Marcus Hall committing to Tosu is greatly exagerrated. He'll supposedly be making a visit to Champaign (of course Buckeye fans - like NDame fans consider any big time name like Hall with an offer a mortal lock for their school).

A few Illini experts out there think that when it is all said and done the 2009 class might be one of our best/deepest in a long long time.

Some names to keep an eye on, all are 4 star or above:

Chris James - 4 star RB out of Florida who has us #1 on his list and doesn't want to wait too long to get things over with.

David Oku - 4 star Rivals/5 star Scouts RB; coming for a visit, really likes Illinois but is in no hurry to commit. Suprisingly the kid from Oklahoma doesn't want to play in Oklahoma.

RB's Bud Golden and Ronnie Wingo.

Kraig Appleton WR, Terry Hawthorne WR, Jheranie Boyd (athletic freak) WR, Nathan Scheelhaase QB (he'll be back in CU for a visit), Darren Jones QB (who they say is a bigger, more polished high school version of Juice), AJ Graham QB out of Florida who runs a 4.5 40, Chris Watt OG, Craig Drummond DE, Hawatha Bell STUD ILB, Darius Moffett ILB, and super stud corner Branden Smith.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of early commits. From everything I've read this staff is out there working HARD, VERY HARD and other schools have taken enough notice to start negative recruiting against us. They say Illinois has a million offers out there, offers to everybody blah blah blah. The Rivals counted and as for official offers we've got fewer out right now than we did last year and less than a lot of schools.

OT - what's funny is that reading what others have said they've seen on the Mizzou boards is that they're all about the NC and, "Illinois is beneath our notice." Also that "Juice Williams isn't very good and if they had played Ohio State they would have won by 14 to 20 easy." "They only had 2 good players and they both graduated." Benn? Vontae? Juice? Martez? Cumberland? These people are delusional, they got boat-raced by (speedy) Oklahoma twice but they're invincible (that first matchup wasn't as close as the score indicated - I watched that game start to finish - OU missed a couple of extra points, at least 1 or 2 FG's and more, then MU got a cheap TD late). Invincible...right. A BCS bowler, pre-season top 15 team? To say we've got no shot is just crazy talk.

Rashard didn't get a fair shake?  Isn't Pierrre Thomas playing in the NFL as well?  The Saints I believe.....

I don't doubt it was a buddy system, but that's the way it works unfortunately.

I'm worried about our RB this season and what about Benn's injury?  I don't know much about it.  Will he be 100%?

Anyone else shocked that Lehman or O'Donnel didn't get drafted?

I'm not really shocked that Lehman didn't get drafted... could've gone either way... in fact, I believe Lehman himself said that a few weeks before the draft during the Illinois spring game broadcast.  His speed just might not be enough at the next level (my words, not his).

As for O'Donnell, he decided not to pursue the NFL on his own... his body was already giving out and he basically didn't want to end up "one of those guys who were limping and not able to do things in life."

What I've heard around the Champaign area that the Mendenhall bro's where not the greatest of teammates to have in the locker room and that Zook was willing to put up with Rashard's attitude if it got him to a bowl game. Since Walter isn't a difference maker, but has  the same poor attitude problem Zook was willing to let him go. As far as package recruiting goes that has become to norm to pick up high caliber recruits. I think are stud WR Benn has a buddy on the team that we signed before him too. I have no problem with getting a difference maker and carrying his buddy along for the ride. With USC and Reggie Bush they gave his mom a $100,000 a year salary cake job to get him there. If the illini wanna be that marquee team that has celebrities on the sidelines and all the top t.v. spots there going to have to start shelling out the dough. I actually think that the illini are more of an honest institution, but maybe we just haven't got caught yet like some other school.
