I went to the spring game yesterday and boy was I impressed. Demetrius Sumler looks like a workhorse in the backfield which can only help out the situation with Darrel Scott and Ray Polk coming in. Cody looked more comfortable in the pocket and seemed to handle the new no-huddle offense well. Marques Simas looked like a manchild out there at wide-out and they threw to him a lot. This kid is going to be a stud if they can get the ball to him. If he progresses as he should this will take pressure off of Scott and Sumler in the backfield which will in turn open up the offense for some big plays.
Suprises of the day for me were of course Sumler and Simas as I said but also Cody Crawford at wide out and Nick Nelson at QB. The whole recieving core was impressive, but Crawford was catching everything thrown his way, running crisp routes and fighting for extra yards after first contact like his life depended on it. He may not get a ton of playing time with the group of kids ahead of him, but from what I saw yesterday he would be a huge asset in those 3rd and 5 situations coming accross the middle. I had all but written off Nick Nelson from the Back-up spot with Ballenger coming in, but the kid showed great field awareness and pocket presence. He completed quite a few passes that should have only been attempted and completed by a 3 or 4 year starter.
The defense struggled in the first half but started to get things going in the 2nd. Linebacker BJ Beatty looked good and was all over the field. He has some big shoes to fill with Dizon gone and Lynn Katoa out due to the fighting charges from February, but when he gets help from JC recruit Shawn Moler we should be ok. With all of the injuries on the defensive front we will have to rely on our backers but if we can get some of these kids healthy the defense is looking to be a strong force again.
I ran into Darrel Scott and got a chance for an autograph and a quick photo with my 11 year old neice. He was as nice as could be and took 45 minutes to sign autographs for a lot of kids and me. He is a gentleman and here is looking to the future. By the way my niece is a Buff fanatic and a solid hoopster and wants to go nowhere but CU. 5'7" 140 at 11.
Finally Ralphie V ran at the game and man is she fast. She got loose at the beginning of the 2nd half and took one of the runners for a ride. She showed the attitude we are looking for from our players by not giving up easily and fighting with everything she had. 08 looks to be a great year and I am as always proud to be a Buffs fan. GO BUFFS!!! Darrel Scott For Heisman!!!
