Let me start by saying I am indifferent on this trade. At first I really liked the idea of Roberts coming to Chicago but now I am more inclined to keep the kids - especially Gallagher.
One thing though...I guess I just don't understand what the holdup could have been. Bedard got traded for a prize prospect in Jones and as far as I can tell not much else (please feel free to correct me on that). Sherrill apparently may be the O's closer, but seems to have been fairly ordinary most of his career. To be fair, I don't now anything about the other players in the deal. So with that said, they trade an ACE starter for a top prspect in Jones and "some players" but can't work something out for Roberts. I find it hard to believe that if the Cubs offered Gallagher, what the heck else could they be complaining about if a "few" other players were throw-ins?
Does anyone know if Pie was the reason? Gallagher/Murton or Gallagher/Cedeno plus a few minor leaguers seems to be an "equivalent" deal to the Bedard trade to me.

no one but he and hendry knows what he wanted.
my guess is 5 players: cedeno, marshall, gallegher, veal, ceda... completely not worth it in my opinion, especially when the alternative is playing derosa every day.

Thanks for the response Win1forRonny. I guess my question is - Why do the Orioles make a deal for Bedard with those players yet want a whole group of top prospects for Roberts? To me, Bedard (being a starting pitcher) would command more in a trade anyway. The names that have been mentioned from all the different posts on this deal (pretty much exactly what you allude to above) seem to indicate that the O's think...
A) Roberts is "worth more" than Bedard
B) The Cubs should pay out the @$$ for Roberts.
or
C) The Cubs are in reality not offering Gallagher or a "top" prospect
Again, I just don't understand why they accept that package for Bedard but can't take Gallagher plus a few guys for Roberts - seems very fair to me!!!

I have banged my head against the wall on this one for several months now. I seemingly cannot come up with a logical reason why MacPhail has not pulled the trigger. Is it because Peter Angelos is not willing to part with him due to an extensive man crush? Maybe. According to Steve Stone, there is not a club that has offered anything close to what the Cubs have put on the table for Roberts. He also made the point that since the Orioles are not going to win for the foreseeable future, they would get 3-5 players in return that have rookie contracts and are major league ready. So my only conclusion is to think that since Bedard was unhappy in Baltimore and did not get along with Trembely, the Orioles wanted to replace Bedard with Rich Hill.

My guess is that McPhail thought in the end Hendry wanted Roberts so bad that Cubs would agree to whatever O's were asking. Its probably a gamble that macPhail is surprised he lost. Its widely assumed that cubs are 'desperate' to win a world championship. Maybe the deal will be made at some later date more on Hendrys terms. . If not, I agree with most others. Im just tired of talking about it ,so lets get on with the season.

While Roberts definitely would have been an upgrade, especially in the lead-off spot, there is a reason why a deal could not be struck. Everything happens for the better. I honestly think that the move would have caused turmoil amongst a few players. Namely Mark DeRosa who undoubtedly should be starting. The Cubs need to play it cool until the break. They won't win it in April and May, and with the tough latter-half schedule, they can then assess what they need at mid season, where potentially many deals will open up, and the Cubs won't have to give up so much in return for a player. These young players may be even better bargaining chips come July. I guess we'll see.

Often the best trades are the ones that never happen. I have long been against it because the perceived cost was imo too high. However, as dayad correctly points out, nobody knows the actual content of the discussions, and there could have been some other facets about which we were unaware. In any case, I think you have some stability now, and I was OK with the team is it was. we do have to hope for hope's sake that this year, Ronny Cedeno puts it together and demonstrates some good value off the bench, that we get rebound years from Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano, who all underproduced, and a big year from Rich Hill that we've all been waiting for. I think we can win it all with what we've got and having been a Cubs fan for more than 20 years, I have only said that once or twice before...!

McPhail wanted to cherry pick the Cubs farm system just like he did in the Miguel Tejada deal were he got 6 prospects in return. Now look at the Astros they have no depth and a god awful starting rotation. So that is probably what McPhail was hoping to do with the Cubs. He over estimated the value the Cubs put on Roberts and he got burned for it. Jim Hendry must have given him 6 players to chose from and knowing McPhail he tried to do 1 of 2 things.
1. He asked for ALL 6 players for Roberts
2. He asked for 4 players and demanded Felix Pie be the fifth.
I feel this trade did not go down simply because Jim Hendry refused to give 5 or more prospects for a player that was not a necessity but a luxury. Meaning Brian Roberts wasnt the make or break player for the Cubs, while the O's thought he was. Basically Jim told McPhail to go take a long walk off a short pier, and try not to drown in the AL East, and dont expect the Cubs to throw you any life perseveres come the trade deadline.
