There are some really great basketball teams coming out of the North part of the Pac-10. Oregon, Washington, and now Washington State have all become very solid programs over the last 5-10 years. Its a dogfight from top to bottom in the Pac-10. And almost nobody in the rest of the countries knows, or seems to care too much. If Wash St pulls off the shocker vs. NC, folks will care!
Great article Gary, very well written. Keep up the good work!

Actually I thought this article was somewhat demeaning. I am not going to deny that WSU is not known for being a powerhouse in any sports. However, making the statements that you just did in this article makes it sound as if anything (be it sports teams or graduates) that comes out of Pullman is a fluke . Very disappointing that this is the only article written about the Cougs pretty much all week and we are disrespected. Especially disappointing is the way you talk about our players being out of their element.

WAZZU is a good team and they deserve all the credit in the world for making it this far. But deep down inside even WAZZU fans know that they will be out of their element tonight. HEELS BY 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How would you know that seeing as you are obviously not a Coug fan. I'm giving the Cougs a %40-50 shot at sending the heels on a short trip home. We may not have faced an O quite as good as the heels bring but the heels have not faced a D anywhere near as stingy as the Cougs'. Like it or not the heels are going to have to play at the pace we dictate and the only teams that can play at that pace as well as us are Wisconsin and UCLA. I'm not going to be guarantee a win but I will guarantee it will be closer than 18.

Koniferous you said it all and i could not agree more, i give the Cougs maybe a slightly lower chance to win more like 25-35% cause it's evident how good the Heels really are, but there is no way this is a blowout. Vegas has us as only 7 point underdogs and if you know anything about Vegas bookies then you know they are usually more accurate than East coast homers that have never seen their opponent play.

Reading though articles late on a Wednesday night stumbling on this article make me some what proud, here in Wisconsin I truly do want to see Wash. St. succeed, Kyle Weaver played in my high school conference (Beloit Memorial in the Big 8 Conference), and Tony Bennett being the son of Dick Bennett, who I will always credit for turning around Wisconsin basketball. I hope Wash St. proves everyone wrong and makes a deep run into the tournament, they are a powerful Pac 10 team and they could and hopefully will turn some heads sometime soon. Good luck Cougars!!

I am a big Heels fan and I give WSU a chance. I think the game will be tight for a while and UNC slowly pulls away 70-60. I think most Heel fans are not taking WSU lightly and will gladly take a victory regardless of score.

It would be a big upset for the Cougs to take down Carolina. But have you met March Madness ?

It is good to see the Cougars flourishing as they face a daunting task, that of defeating the hottest team in the nation. The Pac 10 was pretty outstanding this past campaign, and perhaps the team cut its teeth on the weekly challenge. Play the good 'D' and use up that shot clock. 7 passes and a few 'give and goes', a pair of 'pick and rolls', finishing with a great backdoor pass might just confuse/irritate No. Car.
