Well said BrownDawg - glad to hear the new AD is moving with the times. With UGA being the most underrated program from the SEC, I wonder if the non-travel OOC strategy is why they were always under-valued.
That is opossed to only 1 SEC team (LSU) that doesn't play an OOC BCS foe. 10 of 15 games are against OOC BCS teams that had winning records in 07, 9 of those are on the road, and only 1 of 15 games are against teams with less than 5 wins in 07.
2007 record of BIG 10's 11 2008 OOC BCS opponents - 58-69
2007 record of SEC's 15 2008 OOC BCS opponents 111 - 80. (Top 12 105 - 62)
Meanwhile the Big 10 is moving backwards. 3 teams from the Big 10 don't play an OOC foe from a BCS conference in 2008. Only 4 of 11 games are against OOC BCS foe that had a winning record in 2007 and 6 of the 11 games are against teams that had less than 4 wins in 07.

Georgia has little to be ashamed of with their OOC schedule this year and next year . It is very solid . I would , however , dump Georgia Southern and the like in the future . National Championship contending teams should not be playing FCS ( 1-AA ) teams . Georgia has FCS teams lined up in 2009 , 2001 , and 2013 already . That is not good .

I think Georgia can afford an FCS team when they play
1. Florida
2. LSU
3. Arizona State
4. Auburn
5. Tennessee
6. Georgia Tech
7. South Carolina
8. Alabama
They are probably playing the best 3 teams from the west in 08, plus 2 OOC BCS foes that were in bowls and the 2007 MAC champs.
In 09, they play 3 OOC foes from BCS conferences. All are likely to have potential bowl eligibility and still neither of the MS schools.
Besides, if you are at national power status does it really matter if you are playing a FCS school instead of an Idaho, Buffalo, Florida International, UNLV, San Jose State, or Rice?

Sure it does . Georgia Southern is 0-12 against FBS (1-A) teams since that designation was born in 1978 . Outside of Wake Forest , Appalachian St is 1-20 ( Michigan last year ) against FBS schools since 1978 . They are 6-14-1 against Wake Forest , and in none of the years that Appalachian State defeated Wake Forest , did Wake win more than 3 games . Wake was horrible all of the years that Appalachian St defeated them . Coastal Carolina has never played a FBS school .
The FCS teams on Georgia's schedule have a .140 winning percentage against FBS schools since 1978 . Georgia Southern and Appalachian St are 2 of the better FCS schools . The worse teams in FBS over the last 10 years have been Duke and Buffalo , and their winning percentages are .149 and .165 respectively .
Unless Georgia or similar teams are scheduling the absolute bottom of the barrel of FBS , and can know this several years in advance , a FBS school is almost always a greater challenge than a FCS team .
Do you really like the idea of the power college football teams playing lower division teams ? I personally thinks it sucks .

I can honestly say that I have no problem with Georgia scheduling games against Georgia Southern. Georgia is the 9th most populous state in the Union, yet only two FBS teams exist within the state. Tennessee and Alabama, while having much smaller populations, each have 4 teams. Ohio which claims less than 2 million more people, has 8 teams. Even Michigan, with about half a million more people, has 5 teams. I almost feel as if Georgia has a responsibility to give GSU the exposure that may one day allow it to make the jump to the FBS. As far as playing any other teams from the FCS, I'm not really on board with that. If we need to munch on a cupcake after digesting the Florida's and Auburn's of the world, the Sun Belt is always within reach.

I agree with 4SoCal.
I'm a dawg fan and I HATE us playing these d2 schools. It's a no win situation. You don't really get a sense of your skill level against a team like that. You don't look good if you beat them badly. You usually don't beat them as badly as you should because you overlook them. It's pointless. I'd rather play pretty much ANY BCS team than Georgia Southern.

I am not crazy about playing FCS or Div II or whatever they are called. However, in some cases it is a matter of money, especially if you have too few other home games. The UGA_FLorida game at a neutral site is tradition, but it is also a pain when it comes to having at least 6 home games.
You are right about FCS teams beating FBS schools, but I think the stats might be a bit skewed. If you look at App State and Georgia Southern and who they have played it is probably pretty easy to see why they have such a record. Generally they have played or will play pretty significant powers. After all, the Michigans, Georgias, LSUs , Auburns, Oregon States, Floridas, Va. Techs, FSUs have been among the elite of college football. I am not sure that I fear Georgia Southern any less than I would Duke, Baylor, Buffalo or Louisiana Monroe.

After all, the Michigans, Georgias, LSUs , Auburns, Oregon States, Floridas, Va. Techs, FSUs have been among the elite of college football. Oregon States?????? I think you meant Oregon. Big difference - it would be like mistaking UGA with Georgia Tech.

No, I mean Oregon State since the piece was about who Appalachian State and Georgia Southern had played. Oregon State played Georgia Southern in 99. they were 7-5 and went to a bowl. But you are probably correct....nationaly power is probably not the right word for them in this case. But the point was that Georgia Southern and Appy State have generally played very good Div I teams. I would argue that at least in 1999 Oregon State was a slightly better than average team.
