That is the only way to describe SMC's postseason.  I can accept losing, but not the way they have lost to San Diego and Miami.

Randy Bennett has done a great job of putting together a talented group and creating roles for the players.  In other words he has created a great system.

However, there are some very serious flaws in this team, and it has to do with the mental part of the game and not the physical.  Missing free throws, giving up leads in the second half, players disappearing, turnovers at terrible times, losing on the road, letting teams go on huge runs......these are all symptoms of a general lack of motivation, resiliency and mental toughness.  These are the hardest things to coach and this is where they have failed.  (with the exception of Simpson- I wish everyone had his heart)

I give them credit for getting through the regular season with some good wins and making it to the tourney, but losing to Miami and San Diego the way they did should be unacceptable!  Shooting 50% from the FT line is unacceptable!  Giving up over 50 pts in the second half is unacceptable!  Scoring 6 pts in 8 minutes with the talent they have is unacceptable!  In the big games, and when things aren't going ideal for you, this is when you need to step up the most, and they just seem to collapse.

Ok, so next year you lose Golden and T Smith, and you have a couple of other talented guys coming in.  They've got the talent to have another great season, but if you can't find a way to dig deep and play motivated hoops, it doesn't matter how many talented guys you have.  You're still going to come up short when it matters the most, if you can't adjust the team attitude.

Randy B has his work cut out for him (if he comes back next year) becuase he needs to find a way to get these guys playing with some attitude.  Otherwise, I'll be sitting right here at this time next year talking about what a great regular season they had, but what a dissapointment it all amounts to.

Oh one more thing I forgot to mention.  Getting out rebounded by 13 boards?.......Unacceptable!

How does Samhan, the biggest guy on the floor for both teams only get 5 boards?

If Omar actually tried to box someone out his rebounding totals would double.

I have been saying this for a while now but FREE THROWS.  Man we need to hit at least 75%.  As a small school we need to capitalize on those opportunities.  Also, we just need to play more physical down low.  We will be better next year and I really hope this transfer from Indiana is good because we need the help down low.  The coaches need to work on some post moves and defence with Samhan.   (I actually saw him dunk.  Amazing.)

I feel like Charlie Brown after Lucy picks up the football at the last minute. I know SMC is young and has a good-looking future . . but I was very dissapointed in the team and Coach Bennett. Miami drove through the lane at will Friday; and there were literally no offensive sets in the second half. It was unbearable watching the Gaels dribble down and chuck it up in the second half, never attempting to set anything up. It was a very winnable game, and that is what sucks the most. I know '08-09 looks promising; but he last two games of '07-08 leave a real bitter taste.

"and USD is going to have a chance to get 1 stud now a top 100 player and our 2009 class is already looking great "

Maybe you can enlighten us as to who this phantom recruit is.  San Diego has 1 recruit even interested,  Lorne Jackson, who is listed as a 1-star.  And....he is nowhere near committing and you're like 8th on his list.

"also this guy is Brad Tinsley who is a stud guard backed out of commitment of PEPPERDINE"

Yeah I know who Brad Tinsley is, and I know he backed out on Pepperdine.  So you think that means somehow San Diego is automatically on his list?  Dude, Tinsley has just about every school in D1 on his list, and manages to change his mind weekly about where he's going.

You're right that San Diego's future looks bright, so you don't need to make stuff up to make it look brighter.

According to sources I read and respect, Brad Tinsley is receiving heavy interest from power-conference schools. This includes North Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest. You know SDFAn, USD is a cool school and all, but somehow I doubt that little San Diego is even on his radar after he gets interest from the Tar Heels.

I can't tell you if Jackson is interested in USD or not frankly. He's gathering tons of attention from many big-name schools (and perhaps even SMC). He's by no means even close to a sure-thing commitment to any school.

It's too early to determine whether Grier is a good recruiter. However, St. Mary's 2008 class is across the board superior to USD's class. Period.

I really think next year is going to be our best chance in a while.  Mills will have a year of experience under his belt, and hopefully have improved his defense, so we don't get overrun by talented opposing point guards all year long again.   Simpson will be in his  senior season, so you can only expect him to improve, not to mention we aren't losing much and have some good talent coming .  Definitely a disappointment this post season, but its time to look forward to what should be a great next year for SMC!

That was brutal.  Saint Mary's had a season that was the opposite of USD.  SMC = Great all year, then weak at the end.  USD weak all year, then hot at the end.

Saint Mary's turned out to be a great 1st half team, but those cold spells just killed them.

I am looking forward to next season, should be fantastic!!

I saw Chiverton, one of the St. Mary's recruits in the CIB tournament on Sat.  This kid is for real he's a pretty tall guard that looks like he can drive the lane.  He should be a fanastic player.  I'm looking forward to seeing him on the court next year.

Saint Mary's played a very good game against the canes.

They showed signs of success, and i think they will do better next year

Hopefully they will use the game as a learning experience and gain from it.

Good job saint mary's

Chiverton is going to be the real deal. According to ESPN scouts, he is a "steal" for st. Mary's and a top candidate for newcomer of the year.

Tim Williams, our 6'9 PF, is also expected to be a real impact player, read about him here:

Chiverton is listed as a G or F depending on which site you look at.  Seems like he is a natural wing, but my guess is he'll be an immediate starter at the 2 spot considering they will be thin there without Golden and Smith.

Seems like they will get a little bigger next year with Williams too.  I wonder if he could actually play center?  It will be good to have another option in the paint.

They beat out a lot of great programs to get these guys.  They will definitely have good mix of experience and young talent next year.  Let's just hope they bring a bit more intensity this time around.
