when i think about last season now i wonder how we did it? I guess our pitching and defense carried us but when you think about it just about everyone under-achieved on offense last season. Drew had a horriable year, made up for it in the post season but still had a bad season. Lugo was BAD. Crisp hit .265, Manny had less than 30 home runs for the first time in a long time. Ortiz only hit a few over 30 i believe, and Varitek is getting older so his offensive production is going down. Youk and Lowell stepped up big time. I have a good feeling about this season because its very unlikely that everyone will under-achieve again.

One pitchers name comes to mind after reading this post and his name is "Josh Beckett". Nothing else needs to be said.
What he did in the playoffs to the Indians was priceless and will not be forgotten. He just killed anyone and everyone he faced.
Just something to remember!!! It doesn't matter how you preform in the regular season because everyone has the same record when the playoffs come around, and the Red Soxs just couldn't be stopped.
It was a fun playoff run to watch. I just wish the Angels could have one at least one game, LOL.

yeah I totally agree with the fact that nobody will be a slacker. We have some of the newer talent coming again; mainly Ellsbury and Pedroia. But we got, as you said, Lowell and Youkillis who had a great season last year and should be able to continue that.

Ortiz had a great year other than his HR totals..he hit something like .325 which is a career high..I think know that he is healthy again..he can hit .300 with 40-55 hr's.
Youk was monster the first half last year..cooled off in the 2nd half..but was beastly in the playoffs.
Lowell..not really much to say..he flat out killed it in 07..MVP babyyyy!
Ramirez, Drew, and Lugo are all going to have big seasons..Drew and Lugo both hit .280 or higher in the second half last year..and Manny's head is in the right place, he is as confident as ever, this dude is going to explode.
08 we dominate!

Last year we had a solid offense with great defense and great pitching (starters + bullpen)
This year shouldn't be any different..I see no reasons why It could be. Other than Schilling being hurt.

I would argue that age is an issue for the Red Sox but they are getting younger. And that it is a bigger issure for the Yankees. Ellsbury and Bucholz join a very talented group of young players (Youklis, Pedroia, Beckett, Lester, Paplebon, Matsuzaka) and their are players in the minor leagues that will contribute somewhere pretty soon.
The seasons that Pedroia and Okigima had last year were not expected. They provided good defense, hit for average, and set the tables as well as sured up the middle reliew. Nobody expected Oki to be that dominant, it was his best year as a professional.
Their offense, though it took a step back last year was balanced and scored the 4th or 5th most runs. Their defense was superb. Their pitching was the best in the American league and second only to the Padres overall. That combination put them ahead of everybody, best team. period.
This year expect Pedroia and Lowell to drop off a little. Expect Manny, Drew and Lugo to pick it up and the overall offense to be better.

They won the regular season by being better than most in nearly every phase of the game - starters, relief, hitting and fielding, and they had an organization that was united, top to bottom, about their strategy. They won the postseason because the team was in very good shape, nobody was really beaten down (except Wake). Even Okajima, because they gave him a couple of key weeks off at the end of the regular season. Credit Francona and Theo for that. The World Series winner is the team that peaks at the right time, and the Sox had a plan for that.
2008 certainly looks promising, but injuries can always play hell. Recall what losing Varitek did to the staff late in 2006. Manny and Papi may be better, but will Lowell have another career year? Is Pedroia good for another .320? Will Wake go another 30 starts? No blisters for Beckett?
High hopes, certainly, but hopes only, at this point.

It seems as if you are only focusing on the negative, which every team has. Lowell & Youkilis had great (clutch) years, even Lugo had some big hits. Drew was great in the last part of the season. Pedroia was fantastic all year, Papi, while hitting "only" 30 homers had a great average and RBI year. The pitching was excellent all around. Great new rookies and Manny, although a down year for him, had a good year and add in great defence and what else do you need?

Veterans figure out what they need to do in order to win.Thats just what the Red Sox have plenty of and they knew they needed to step it up and play. after down 3-1 to the Indians their pitching went into another gear and they hit much better. their defense is usually strong not to man errors and not many stupid mistakes. Mann may not have had 30 homeruns but he hit for a good average and had planty of key hits like they need from him. Ortiz was hurt and Kevin Youkilis stepped up and did good. They dont have very many holes on their game.

i think the reason we won it all last year was mainly our pitching, but our lineup was a big factor during the regular season. During the playoffs everyone came through for us. Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, and Josh Beckett.

You guys are absolutely correct. Our pitching was just incredible. The only that really bugged me was that Beckett did not win the CY.
