There aren't enough poll options to list all of the question marks on our team, but we certainly have plenty. Starting pitching seems to be most peoples' biggest concern, but consider that we've also got a couple of rookies in our starting line-up, a shortstop who is now off the juice, and a #3 pitcher coming off of TJ surgery.

If you vote "other", go into detail.

For me, #4 and #5 pitchers are going to be a problem for us.

Woody looks worse than ever, Paulino is most likely out for the season, and we traded away Albers and Patton. That leaves us with just Chacon (coming off of a terrible outing) and Sampson as our #4 and #5 options with any experience.

I'd have to say spots #2 thru #5 and the pen.  Cecil Cooper referred to Woody Williams as the #2 starter recently??!!!  I've played slow-pitch softball with lower scores than these spring games.  Wandy may work out, but it's getting ugly!

Meanwhile, Jason Jennings is having a good spring.....w/ the Rangers.  Billy Crystal could probably take Woody deep.  And the relievers are throwing batting practice.  Ty Wiggington almost makes me miss Ensberg.

Other than that, things look great.  Hopefully, it's just an April Fool's prank.

i voted other.  biggest issue i see right now is overall team depth.  if any of oswalt/pence/lee/berkman/tejada go down for the season, we are toast.

we may be toast anyway, pitching overall is bad.  oswalt is our only pitcher who's any good.

thwey should cut woody now.  if they don't do it now, they will do it later...

Bleh its getting worse as the spring goes on. I'm not worried one bit about the rooked Bourne and Towles look sick and Pence is owning it up. Wiggington is a bit of a concern hopefully he'll pick it up a bit. Tejada isn't playing that great atm but he'll be fine once the season comes around.. My main concern on the hitting will be Matsui we'll see how that plays off. As far as the pitching, the relievers look fine. Some are pitching terrible but prob wont play for the team anyway. SP looks Awful. Backe we'll be fine pretty sure. Wandy will pitch better once the season comes. After that Im kinda terrified. I really did like Sampson and hope he starts. Chacon looks terrible. Hernandez terrible, Williams TERRIBLE. I dunno we'll see

Another day, another 21 runs allowed, despite 6 hitless innings from The Wizard!  Oscar V is doing his job, but how many save opportunities will he actually get?

The only other noteworthy outing was some guy named Aaron Rakers???  He was probably recruited from the bleachers to get somebody out.  The ERAs are looking more like birthweights(and there's some huge babies in the group).

It's been 60 years since the famous "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain" motto for the Braves.  A less-catchy "Oswalt and pray for a flood" may be the Astros motto.

Nashmeister!  Get a glove and start warming up!

Rakers? Boy, we're really pulling them out of the woodworks. Sadly, I think Cassel is actually going to get a rotation spot simply by virtue of walking less than three people per inning.

We just need to find somebody who is going to throw the ball over the plate. I'd much rather have a guy like Nieve in there who isn't afraid to give up a solo homer every now and then.

I don't think I'm ready to step in yet though. I'm still fine-tuning my change-up. Maybe I can be a spring call-up.

I voted other as well. Our biggest problem will be our bullpen. They have looked awful this spring and Brocail has looked the worst of all. I think this team was in much better shape last year even with Lidge as our closer. Valverde to me is another Mitch Williams in the making and a guy who will blow a lot of games and save a lot as well. Very inconsistent.  Both Qualls and Safarte will be missed.  I think the front office made trades just to make a trade and keep fans quiet. Too me this is going to be a very long year.  While we have  a very nice offensive lineup the rest of the team has major holes. I'm looking for no more then a 4th place finish this year behind the Brewers, Reds, and Cubs. I'm excited about baseball starting but not as excited about my team.

Im worried most about the 4-5 spots. Sampson did look good today but with Woody, Chacon, Cassel and anyone else trying for the spot doing terrible that kills the depth. I wouldnt be surprised to see Moehler or Brad James in the 5 spot after a few months.

Brocail im not worried about because he almost always has bad spring trainings but does well in the regular season. Matsui's health does bother me a little especially since the season hasnt even started. Loretta will help a lot if Matsui has continued injury issues.

Maybe in all this unecertainty someone unexpected will step up big.

I had an earlier thread about pitching and mentioned Nieve, and someone said he is out for the year.  I recently saw he was sent to the minors, and he hasn't pitched.  Otherwise, I really like th eway he pitches.

I saw part of yesterday's game vs Mets, & Wesley Wright(a smallish lefty) has pretty good stuff, & may help the team.

And I don't know about you, but my fastball IS my changeup.

i'm worried about our # 2,3,4,5 pitching spots and relief pitching.but we put ourselves in that position buy trading way top prospects and getting nothing in return over the last few years.   we are going to give up the most runs in the NL. i'm not worried about our lineup, it looks like our best ever!

WHOA! WHOPS-H-TOWN!!   I like a lotta "junk in the trunk," but that angle almost makes it too big.  I'm glad you're an Astros fan though, & I'll just assume the camera add 20 lbs to the avatar.

In defense of Sampson, I saw the interview and apparently he had 4 good innings w/ low pitch count, so he started the 5th, which is where all the runs came from.  He admitted to "hitting the wall," so maybe he'll actually be OK.

As for Kaz, it's nice knowing the details on injuries, but in this case, I'll have to plead TMI.  His anal fissure should be between he & his dr.  On the other hand, if above avatar had the same problem, I'd equate it to a giraffe w/ a sore throat.....not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yea, Sampson hasn't pitched in a week or two, so I'm not too concerned about that. I think he's just working up to a higher pitch count right now. Hopefully he'll be able to give us a solid six or seven by the time the season starts.

I'm not too worried about Brocail either. I was sort of nervous when I realized we got him from the Padres, seeing how Woody made the transition to the juicebox, but Brocail was actually much better on the road last year, surprisingly.

Home: 4.88 ERA and .303 opponents BA over 31.1 IP
Away: 1.79 ERA and .173 opponents AB over 45.5 IP

That's big-time.

Oscar V. and Valverde both look solid. Geary looks so-so. Regardless, we have four solid arms in the bull-pen this year at the very least. The way Sarfate is pitching for Baltimore right now though, I wouldn't mind having him still. Apparently they're considering him as a closer.

I had something to say, but Whops-H-Town's avatar made me forget what it was.

But I'm with everyone else.  After Oswalt it looks grim.  Let's just hope the hitters can help the pitching staff pitch with the lead on occasion.  That may help a little.

I have faith in Backe, he will have a good year. Wandy and his Jekyl and Hide routine can be annoying, but you can count on him getting 10 plus wins for you. Sampson is good and I am hoping he breaks out this year. As for our bullpen, we will have one of the best in NL. Wade out did himself in insuring us that if we dont have the lead in the 6th and we get it back we will keep it. I wouldnt worry about the pen.

I don't know about the bullpen and scares me. This spring Brocail got lit up and seemed like Valverde gave up a run every time he was out there. To me unless we have at least a  2 run lead in the 9th Valverde will blow a lot of saves this year. The only bright spot is Wright. I'm hoping we can some how sign Vargas and then move Sampson to the bullpen.
