Cran,
I'm done with ESPN. It would appear that your conference is getting a little tired of having it shoved up their rear, as well. Someone has said that Benson is no longer going to allow football on Sundays. Good for him. Should've never allowed it in the first place.
Hopefully, with CBS now fully taking charge at CSTV, things will change. Hopefully, there'll be no more Goldie Hawn movie showings when they could've been broadcasting the BYU-Utah basketball game. Seriously, nobody watched Goldie Hawn movies even when they weren't 15 years old.
I'm all in favor of finding a way to make the current partership work, but CSTV (now CBS Sports) and Versus have to start doing their part. The problem is, I think they know we absolutely detest the ESPN alternative. The contract only lasts a few more years, and then we'll see what happens.
But Cran, before you mock the DirectTV Mtn deal, can Coach Pete tell his recruits parents that if they pay for the $60 DirectTV package they'll get to watch every single one of their son's football games this upcoming season? Didn't think so.

I have a question/comment. I heard something about KJZZ, here in Utah, wanting to strike a deal with BYU football. I didn't really find out anything about the "deal" but was wanting to know if any of you have heard anything about it, and if you have, please pass on the knowledge.

USC,
While it is true that ESPN is trying to stretch it's CFB games to broadcast all weeknight long (which I disagree with btw), I would much rather watch my team play on ESPN and/or ESPN2 (available everywhere) even on Sunday night than a backwater channel that less than half of the nation will see. Sure you can BUY the channel, but other than the parents of said players and some hard core BYU fans out of town who would really waste the money?
I'm not a fan of ESPN pushing around non-BCS conference teams, but if that is the price for the exposure so be it. Sunday games? Of course I don't want to ever see that again. But to trade that for the MTN channel? No way!
Coach Pete need only mention the appearances on ESPN (a national audience not a special package that no one will watch) and of course the Fiesta Bowl. I don't think he's too worried about competing with any MWC team on that level.

Cran, your complete bias is showing through once again. This TV package is great in that those already living in the MWC boundaries will not have to upgrade or pay extra for anything. You'll be able to get the MTN on cable, Directtv and I would guess Dish very soon on their basic packages. So unless you have basic TV, you'll have no problem getting every game.
Fans will also be able to get it nationwide buy purchasing the sports package. I can't think of anything more awesome for a fan of a MWC team living in Wisconsin like my father and brother do. They'll get to see every single game this year. Can you say that for your fans living outside of Idaho Cran. Sure, they can see the 4 or 5 games on ESPN Sunday or Tuesday night, but can they see all of them and at times when they would traditionally want to sit down and watch a football game? You BSU fans have become a slave to ESPN and its downright hilarious to watch your worship of them and how they slap you around like little girls and you don't even seem to know it.
Coach Pete can mention the appearances on ESPN all he wants in recruiting. Trust me, we've been there done that. All Bronco has to do is say, hey do you have Directtv? We'll be on every Saturday (you know a day when a recruit would actually watch football). Keep clinging to that Fiesta Bowl though. Considering I didn't see BSU anywhere near the top 50 recruiting classes this year, I'd say that and ESPN aren't helping you as much as you like to pretend they are.

Are you seriously putting stock in the "top 50" recruiting classes? Oh brother. You of all people should know those bias ratings have no bearing at all on how good a team will be. Come on backer.
As far as Boise State being a "slave" to ESPN...
I don't know if I would say any Bronco fan "worships" ESPN and their scheduling, but even you would have to admit that the exposure over the past few years thanks to ESPN has moved Boise State into the national spotlight. Five years ago anyone outside of the northwest hardly knew Boise State had a football team. Now almost every cfb fan in the nation knows of the program. ESPN is not solely responsible for that exposure, but they played a huge part in it. Did it cost Boise State a few games outside the normal cfb traditional saturday appearances? Sure, but the results are undeniable.
Myself I am happy the MWC chose to shun ESPN. It opened the door for the WAC, and in my own personal opinion has directly resulted in the consecutive appearances by Boise State and Hawaii in the BCS bowl games. The WAC has enjoyed national exposure in the past few years it would have most likely never seen had the MWC still dominated ESPN coverage. The Pac-10's deal with FoxSports also has helped along with the overall growth in cfb's popularity. Certainly it is no one thing, but again you have to admit ESPN has been great for Boise State and the WAC in general even with the shuffling of schedules.
So enjoy your low-def programming on your "traditional" cfb saturdays and I'll enjoy my HD Espn nation wide evening broadcasts for the big games and settle for local coverage for the less important ones. By the way, no more Sunday night games for the WAC according to the commish, which is what most fans disliked the most last season.

Cran, you sound like you're trying to convince yourself of something. If its me you're trying to convince, you still have a long way to go.
1. I am not, nor have I ever put stock into top 50 recruiting classes. However you brought up that Coach Pete would be able to recruit better than BYU because of the Fiesta Bowl and ESPN exposure. I was merely showing you that according to the experts, The Fiesat Bowl and ESPN exposure has doen nothing to help them recruit better than BYU. You can dispute it all you want, but BYU is ranked higher in both recruiting classes since the 06 Fiesta Bowl. Sorry bud.
2. I think the thing that moved BSU into the national spotlight was the Fiesta Bowl/proposal and the whole underdog story of it. It had nothing to do with ESPN. ESPN has not helped BSU much at all. If it wasn't for the Fiesta Bowl, they would just be another good mid-major hogging the ESPN airwaves on crappy nights when few people actually watch or care.
3. I am also happy the MWC chose to shun ESPN. We made a ton of money on the deal. All BYU fans everywhere get to watch all of their games and we don't have to worry about leaving work early, canceling family gatherings, etc to go watch our teams play anymore. Yes the freedom from ESPN slavery is quite nice. I'm glad you're enjoying it. The rest of the country, including MWC fans are laughing at you.
4. I'll enjoy my games, low def or not. At least I'll enjoy all of them and so will every BYU fan around the country now. No more Sunday night games for the WAC. Now we'll get to watch them on Tuesday, and Wednesday's at 4:00 in the afternoon. Much, much better.

hey backer, is it that time yet that we start labelling cran as a troll, and telling him to get the hell off our board?

nonbcs,
I wouldn't mind a few of the BSU regulars posting comments over here. Several of them are quite knowledgeable about college football, and it would help liven what has been a semi-dead board. Of course, there are a couple of BSU posters that I hope never come over here, as they are trolls even on their own board.
Pirate fan,
I think other conferences are waiting to see how the MWC, who was the pioneer, and the BIG Ten work out the kinks in the "all conference programming, all the time" channels. Once one of those two lays down a successful blueprint, I think you'll see all of the major conferences following suit. The smaller conferences would still find it tough to find an audience, imo, and may have to join forces with each other to create a successful channel.
Now, if I could just get my neighbor to cut his trees down, I could get DirectTV and catch all of the BYU games this fall. Here I was, being all savy and buying a house in an older neighborhood so I wouldn't have to deal with the new "gated community" phenomenom, civic associations, and non-existant yards, and BAM! My neighbor with his 200 foot tall pine trees in his back yard won't let me get a dish. Ah, the humanity!

Hey, dude, I've been on the boards with you and seen it. I also know the intent of your post here was just for fun. I just wanted to clear the air for the people lurking who may not know the history of your satyrical post.
I also know from past experience that there are several on this board who don't handle criticism well, and start shouting at non-BYU fans to go home. While I'm not usually as confrontational as BYUbacker and sometimes you can be, I do like debating different points of view and realize that it makes for much more intriguing diologue. Hence, the main reason we enjoy hanging out on the BSU board so much.
There are many sports fans who would only like see posts like, "We rock!" "Yeah, we rule!" "Yeah, we're the greatest."
They just don't realize that what they're asking for can get extremely dull in a very short period of time.
Anyway, what I was trying to say is, even though I and you (and probably Cran) know your post was satyre, I don't want to risk chasing potential posters away.

thats fine gamecocks, i agree with your statement... too much butt-kissing and indulgence in homerish statements, gets mighty boring real fast... i like the way you worded your reason for going to the bsu board... to me that board is mostly entertainment, however, you and backer do make some good comments and assessments there... too bad the same cannot be said about the overwhelming majority of hosts. oh well...

Hey, if you want to see some homerish posting, I've done some lurking on the Tennessee boards (what, they being fellow SEC and all). I like to scope out future opponents to get a feal for the competition. Anyway, while they are giving a little bit of credit to Florida (I'm assuming that's due to the fact that they got their butts handed to them on ten gold platters last year by Florida), they're talking as if they're going to be the class of the SEC this year. Did I miss something? Did a lot of their top offensive performers not graduate? Did their entire offensive coaching staff not get replaced? Do they all of the sudden magically have a top rated defense? Yet they sure are talking a big game amongst themselves at the moment, patting each other on the back. Homerish fans are everywhere.
I say what's wrong with critiquing your own team. What's wrong with saying our defense is very unproven at the moment? Or that our offensive line needs to perform a ton better this year? Or that it sure would be nice if a second receiver alongside Austin would step up in big games? Speak and play with confidence, but don't fail to give your opponents credit.
Most of the Tennessee fans are looking right past my Gamecocks. Excuse me, did we not beat you in Knoxville three years ago? Did you not need a freak of what should of been an interception touchdown catch to beat us the last time in Columbia? Did you not need one of your lineman to get a false start in order to get a do-over on a missed fieldgoal (in addition to the fact that two Gamecocks let a game ending fumble recovery slip through their hands)? That had not your own false start given you a do-over, we'd be 2-1 against you in the Spurrier era? And while Holtz may have gone 0 for 6 against you, it was only in his first season that the margin was by more than a touchdown.
We may not have the best record in the world, but give us some respect. You can say that if your guys play to their level they should win, but not, "Oh, yeah, that one's a gimmie. We just need to show up." Hey, I'll talk trash with the best of them, but I don't mind pointing out where our opponents could hurt us, or where we could do better.

nonbcs and USC, I think you guys know that I don't mind fans of other teams posting here. I do have a problem with fans who are completely unrealistic and have no sense of anyone or anything outside of their own bubble. I think Cran fits into this category. He's the one that's been telling me on the BSU boards that BSU is going to sweep BYU 4-0 when they play in a few years. You can't even get him to admit the possibility that BYU could even win one of those games. That kind of stupidity is what you typically find with the BSU fans on this board and on their own. There are very few BSU posters whose opinions I respect, because they live in some kind of weird fantasyland bubble where BSU is unstoppable and any games they lose have more to do with a lack of focus on BSU's part than the fact that they may not be as good as the team that beat them.
