Damon has averaged 171 hits a year over his career. He is current at 2202 career hits at age 34. He'll probably finish this seasona round 2280, leaving him 720 short. At 171 hits a year, he'd only need 4 full seasons plus another 50 games or so to reach 3000, at which time he would be 38.

Seems pretty damn possible to me, which begs this question: 3,000 hits is usually a ticket to the Hall Of Fame, but is Damon a Hall Of Famer? Not in my book. A career .290 BA, 103 OPS+, and (approximately 250 homeruns when he retires) are not HOF-stats in my book.

This gets me to the true purpose of my oposts. It's time the raise the watermark for career hits threshold. Everyone with 3000 hits is in the HOF. It's time that changed. Damon is not worthy. We need to stop with this modern trend of putting in career compilers and only allow dominators.

Longshot, IMO.

He could get to 3000, I suppose, but he's got to get regular AB's until he's almost 40, and I dont see it happening.

Speaking of HOF milestones though, I think the one that's going to need to be looked at soon is 500 HRs. Thome and Manny this year-and there's going to be a bunch more in the next few.

He looked old last year, but this year his OPS+ is actually higher than it was his first year as a Yank. If he wants to keep playing and he stays healthy, he'll make it to 3000. 170 hits a year is his carer average. 140 hits a year is very reasonable over the next five years, which would put him right there.

More stats:

0 Gold Gloves

0 Silver Sluggers

2 All star selections

4 times placing in the top 20 for MVP with the highest being 13th.

The one stat other than 3000 hits, should he reach it, that might warrant him consideration for the HOF is the runs he has scored. He's 105th on the career list now. He's probably going to finish in the top 25 all time.

Again, he is not HOF-worthy in my book, but he might get in if the time-honored watermarks are not re-defined.

Like Beltran, he peaked as a Royal, and when he left, people figured out who he was.

career year 1999, which coincidentally was his walk year.

Typical me first player, who performs when there is money on the line.  Never shut his mouth, wanted to be a GM, always had opinions about what the team should do, then wrote the award winning book on how to cheat on your wife.

Class act.  NY is lucky to have him.

Scott Boras client. What do you expect? Boras teaches his clients to have the exact mindset that you are describing. Your number one obligation is to yourself/family/career, not the ownership you are contracted to nor the fan base you play for.

Traded from KC After rejecting the same amount of money he received two years later in
Boston.  I'm no math whiz, but that's bad business.
