I agree about the two-way street of contracts. PLayers want security because the shelf-life of an NFL player is far shorter than any other professional sport. If the goal of a player is to get paid long-term, but he can be discarded like yesterday's newspaper the minute he gets hurt or has a bad year, and the team saves all that money on roster bonuses, so be it. Get rid of the salary cap and that will change immediately. Unfortunately, with the collective bargaining agreement about to be scrapped, you never know where today's NFL will go. Right now, baseball has the fairest contract structure in that once you sign for a specific number of years, you are owed that money regardless of whether or not you are cut or traded. In the NFL, a 6-year contract means nothing. I don't even know why players sign them if they don't intend to play for six years. There's no middle ground. IN the case of Burress, he really has no leverage, but I think he is a piece of the puzzle that we need to retain. Shockey, I would be DELIGHTED to get rid of. The dude is an A$$hole of the highest order, and I am not questioning his skills. He would look terrific somewhere else. Nobody needs the big whining crybaby to infect what was a very tight locker room. We've got six or so contracts that we really do need to address and Burress's is not one that I view as a high priority right now. Chris Snee is the next contract we need to lock down and after him, we need to get Osi into the deal he wants. Snee is due a big raise, Osi will not be substantial as he is already being paid a good bit. Burress would likely get his money next year, as will Brandon Jacobs. However, I could see Jacobs leaving as a free agent if he gets hurt again this year.

Hawk I agree with all that you have said, especially as to whom should be signed. The thing that I think that should be changed in paying these guys, is that rookies coming in should not get paid higher than the people that are out there. There are proven pro bowlers getting paid less than some rookie who has yet to get on the field. How demoralizing is that. You should get paid for your productivity, with incentives so you get your pay raises as you deserve it They should have a starting salary by position and escalated by your performances. Equal opportunity for everyone.

Plax did say that he wasn't asking for TOs numbers, but wanted a long term contract. He prefers a deal that would keep him a Giant until he retires.

Don't let Rosenhaus trick you into drinking the Kool-aid. That is standard language which basically means "I don't want more money; it's all about the team." Which of course, is nonsense.

Plaxico Burress will be 34 when his current deal expires. Not a spring chicken, and Wide Receivers, like Running Backs fall off a cliff later in their careers. (See: Harrison, Marvin). Yes, the great ones like Jerry Rice, Art Monk and even Isaac Bruce stay on strong, but chances are a tall target who gets hit alot and has bad ankles might be finished in 3 years.

If he really wanted to finish his career as a Giant, he'd sign a new deal in 2011 for 2-3 more years.

Why can't one god damn athlete honor his contract. He was paid very well at the time of his contract. He should of signed for 3 years if he thought he would outplay his contract. You certainly don't see these clowns give back money when they under perform, I want to see more teams take a hardline approach and not renegotiate when these players hold out.

Los923,

The thing about Plaxico contract is that it was made for the Giants not to sustain a big hit if Plaxico did not work out well as the number 1 wideout. Players holdout because no contract is guaranteed. In order to have a contract gurantee you have to get paid that money up front. Management always do not honor contracts and cut the players or force them to reneiogiate their contracts. What we as fans see our inflated numbers that the player will never receive. Take Ryan Grant for example because he is under contract to earn little less then a $1million should he be forced to honor that deal knowing that he is the featured back. Plaxico Burress outperformed that deal and all 31 teams will offer him alot more then what the Giants are paying him. The guy did nothing but produce and become a playmaking receiver and he deserves compensation for it. You dont treat star wideouts liek that. I believe Plaxico Burress should receive a deal around the numbers that Bernard Berrian received. Lay off the players because this is what they do and it is a business and honor is not amongst both sides. As far as I can recall the Giants did the samething with Strahan a while back. We are not the Eagles, we want to keep our stars and build off them. Not cut them and let them go to rival teams (Terrell Owens). The Redskins, Eagles, and the Cowboys would all love to Plaxico Burress on their roster. Do the right thing Gmen.

Hawk,

Funny you should mention baseball contracts. Isn't baseball the league that escalates a players contract in relation to other players of the same position? In other words, I have heard of contracts that ensure that a playerX remains the "Highest paid second baseman in the league". So when a second baseman gets a new contract higher than playerX with this wording in his contract, Player X's contract automatically gets renegotiated. Sounds like a plan? But do we really want this in the NFL?

The guy has proven he's a team player to me.  Playing all last season at a high level despite having the leg injury and still performing in the playoffs with a torn MCL.  That's a team player.  Plaxico deserves and will get his pay bump as well as a longer term deal.  Afterall we are the NY Giants, not the NY Jets.
