Of course in starting this discussion you would need to look at the possible candidates and the way their starts stack up.
Cliff Lee in the AL would be logical, but he throws Sunday and then again on the Saturday before the game.... so he is out. Justin Duchsherer might be a good choice he pitched yesterday and then throws again on Tuesday, but he may be slated for Sunday before the ASG. Maybe they hold him back to start. Same could be said for Joe Saunders, he is the same as Duch. Wow.. same for Kazmir.  Francona will have a tough choice to make there. He may even go with Daisuke unless he is set for the Sunday before the game.

As for the NL,  both Webb and Lincecum pitch on the Wednesday before the game , so that would be 6 days rest. Not sure if Hurdle would do that.  Kyle Lohse pitches on Friday prior to the game.  So does Aaron Cook. And Zambrano and Haren pitch on Thursday, which would be normal rest. But Zambrano may skip to rest his injuries.

My best guess is probably Zambrano vs Saunders. Not a sexy match up but a very good one...

Thoughts.. opinions

Wouldn't Edinson Volquez be in the mix of NL options?  I can't see how he can be left off the NL all star team.  I would hope that Francona picks Roy Halladay too, because I don't think a Blue Jay everyday player warrants an all-star selection.

ESPN is saying Mariano Rivera since it is the last season in Yankee stadium, which I think is a joke.  He is a great pitcher, but just because it is the last year there doesn't mean they should be guaranteed the spot.  Cliff Lee.

Larry.. ESPN did not say that, Buster Olney the Yankee apologist did and was laughed at by BOTH of the other men on the Baseball Tonight set. Rivera might make the team, but he wont start...that would be silly.
As I stated in my topic starter, Lee is not an option to start the game. He will make the team and may throw to a batter or 2 late, but he would be pitching on 3 days rest and Eric Wedge would not allow it to happen.
As for the Volquez idea, he too will MAKE the team, but he pitches the Saturday prior to the game. That may keep him from starting the game.

Cliff Lee / Justin Duchscherer / Roy Halladay for the AL and Edinson Volquez / Tim Lincecum for the NL.
