Yeah Nickx if Rossi would have been elected he would have taken the deal and put the money in his own pocket like he did at Safeco. The fact is the politicians saw no benefit in either extending taxes or adding taxes for the sake of the Sonics. This isn't like the Mariners or Seahawks. Even with the Seahawks the city/county didn't take on debt it was the state. It the city/county aren't afraid of the policitial consequences of not supporting the Sonics there is no chance. You know there will be a no taxes for professional sports group. In Seattle they may have more influence than the pro sports group. I think Bennett made a good bet on the $30 million. I don't see the legislature voting for new taxes or extending existing taxes for a refurbished Key Arena.
As far as Bennett is concerned I don't believe that he would have found an acceptable arena deal no matter what was offered. He bought the team and planned to move the team and Stern knew he was planning on moving the team. Remember Stern said that the Key was unacceptable and a new arena was needed. The New Orleans team did well in their year in OKC. Bennett thinks that his team can continue that interest. It will be interesting if any of his young players stay or will they opt out for free agency when the time comes.
i must say it will take some getting used to not having the supersonics in seattle but anyone who is not a die hard supersonics fan should able to move on. i mean the franchise hasnt done much since they went to the finals in 96' so as an avg NBA fan i can't say that this has an emotional effect on me. i will always remember the days of the glove and the reignman in seattle.
Hell yeah, the glove in his heyday, with Shawn Kemp....awesome duo. Don't forget Sikma, and McMillian also......some great players. I'll miss the Sonics, they were another reason why the rest of the country didn't write off the pacific NW sports teams. Ah well, let us toil in obscurity in our corner of the world, that's the way we like it anyways... ;)
