There is never enough or a lot of pitching. The Cubs Rotation with Big Z in it is as follows, Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Jason Marquis Sean Gallagher, now imagine if we had C. C Sabathia, Zambrano, Sabathia, Dempster Lilly and Gallgher, that is a killer rotation. No on is saying screw Carlos Marmol go for Sabathia, but starters are needed, and if we get him were set for the playoffs.

Are we really set?  There are no guarantees with Sabbathia or any other pitcher.  Remember, the Cubs had two of the most effective NL pitchers in '03 and still lost a 7 game NLCS.  Acquiring Sabbathia guarantees nothing.  So, if you gamble and strip your bullpen of a quality set up guy and other prime pices in your system and still lose in the playoffs, then what?

Do not misinterpret my argument.  I am not saying do not make a smart deal.  But, trading from your MLB roster only weakens one area to strengthen another that may not even prove to be required.   I would also remind you that Sabbathia can only effect 1 or 2 games per playoff series while Marmol or  Soto could impact each game.  And, C.C. Sabbathia has had very poor post season performances to date.  I stick with neither.  For a rental, I can see 3 or 4 prospects and damn the future to that degree.  But, unless trading a poorly contracted SP or a utility player in the package, I would leave my MLB roster alone.

but jazzman if we do win the world series, we dont need to resign him, there will be plenty of other free agents anxious to come to chicago. if we dont win the world series with cc and cant resign him, which i dont see why we wouldnt be able to sell him on the city, our team and our history, salary issues or not, then we let him go, get another guy, and whoever signs cc owes us 2 first rounders because he is a restricted free agent who will go for a huge salary. i say we trade ceda, marmol, and one position player prospect, and if needed marshall.

Jazz, it is a tough decision no doubt.  MArmol has been unbelivable.

And while you are right, it gaurantees nothing, a starting pitcher - that is a stud starting pitcher - is much more valuable than a reliever for the simple fact that he pitches more innings.  Sabathia's presence would not only increase starter's output, but he would make all the relievers better since they won't be as overworked as they are now.  Does that compare with the loss of Marmol?  No, but it needs to be added to the equation.

Believe me, I dont' want MArmol going anywhere (and I think his recent missteps has caused the normal knee-jerk reaction to think he is expendable or not quite as good as we thought- which I don't agree with), BUT if he's the piece that makes the trade go through, I would certainly have to consider it.  Maybe not go through with it, but at least consider it.

No and No!

C.C. Sabathia is only going to be a rental anyway. He is going to want Barry Zito / Johan Santana money and we most likely won't sign him.

All I hear these days is that we don't have enough for him anyway. I just ope he doesn't end up with the Brewers who are persuing him. If we don't get C.C. but end up with a Randy Wolfe and retain Soto and Carlos Marmol I am just fine with that.

Wolf is not that much of an upgrade over what we have. I wouldn't take Gallagher out of the rotation, and learning on the job for Wolf. The problem right now is after Z (Who can throw a lemon here and there) and Dempster (Who is having problems on the road), Lilly (Who is getting more stable / Still predicting 15 wins) Gallagher (Still a kid and not getting a spot in the rotation in the play-offs) Marquis (Classic Jeckyl and Hyde). In a 5 game series teams will go with a 3 man rotation with the day's off in between games. In a 7 game a 4th is needed. Wolf is ok on a given night but it would pay off more to decide if Gallagher is that guy they want for the long haul or not and get a player for him or not and stick with the current rotation.

To the main point of is Marmol worth it or not. Well, the way I look at it is the chance is now. Next year is next year. If loosing Marmol hurts the Cubs chances more than getting C.C. helps them it becomes pretty pointless.

Now the thing that I've been noticing lateley is that Marmol has been in a slump for the past few weeks. Even today he got 0 outs and 1 run. Not I feel this is a bump in the road, on the other hand I'm wondering if he is hiding something. This has been a little too constant on not getting the job done.
